Thread: Covid-19

I've had a very interesting Civid experience this last month (I think.). Wife and 2 boys got Covid back in November. I shared a bed, bedroom and bathroom with my wife while she had it. While I quarantined back in November, the only suggestion of a symptom I had was that when I went jogging, I got winded really easily...much, much quicker than normal. Fast forward to the week before the Masters...I was using the bathroom and it became very obvious that my poop didn't smell right at all. Smelled like burnt chemically plastic. I shrugged it off as having eaten something that didn't agree with me. Except it happened the following day too. And later that evening, my wife was cooking food...and it had that same burnt chemical plastic smell. It was...to say the least...alarming and unpleasant. If anyone has ever microwaved a plastic bowl with food in it and a layer of plastic on top and you take it out of the microwave as soon as it's done cooking...you know that smell? Well, that's what feces, flatulance and cooking food all smelled like. Identical.

So..this last month, I haven't eaten much other than cold food. I've noticed that it seems to be all things above room temperature. Poop, farts, my dogs' farts, cooking food and if I'm behind a semi at a traffic light and they accelerate, the smell of hot diesel fuel has the exact same smell. All burnt chemically plastic. Suffice to say, I weighed myself Monday morning because my wife said I was looking sunk in and not healthy...was in the 170's for the first time since high school. I've read up on this and found it's quite common with people months after they contracted covid. It will eventually go away...but it's definitely unpleasant and unsettling. Strange, strange virus.

I was never tested back in November...people have told me I should go get an anti-body test. I have decided not to because if it's positive, it just confirms what I'm already 99.9% sure of...I had it. But if it's negative, then I'm losing my mind. Hell of a weight loss plan though. Freaky. I actually think it's starting to go away. I was able to eat a steak soft taco last night for Cinco de Mayo. It was quite a bit of progress from this last month.

Is your wife just a terrible cook?

That was a lot of info about your poop. Thank you for that!

That sounds like really strange stuff and shows how little we really know about this virus. You would have been better off with the complete loss of smell they talk about. Regardless, I’m glad you are starting to feel better and hope for a full recovery soon.

Wife is a fine cook. Hell, a couple weeks ago I grilled USDA prime filets from Dorothy Lane Market...about as good as a cut of meat you can buy. One bite and I was done. And, yeah, sorry about the poop...but I couldn’t explain the situation without bringing it up. Maybe I should have said feces? Hehe. Thanks for the well wishes. Lack of smell would have been a much better alternative...I think. It sure does seem to be one arbitrary and capricious virus.

I was kidding and just want you to get back to 100%.

I have a buddy who got throat cancer and lost his sense of taste for a LONG time. He found it extremely difficult to eat. Like you say, one bite and he was done. Had trouble maintaining weight. He’s very slowly regaining his ability to taste food, but the list of things we take for granted is a long one!

Haha. True. Probably TMI. But at least the last couple COVID-19 replies haven’t turned into a political pissing match. Mission accomplished by burnt plastic smelling poop.

Eh lack of smell would have played into the lack of taste, weirdly what I've seen from reports of friends is that a lot of them never got their taste back 100%, so this kind of goes along with it, though that was a wonderfully detailed story hahah.

Yeah...but this isn’t lack of smell. This is fake smells. I know my dog’s fart doesn’t smell like a filet mignon. It’s parosmia...or something like that. Ever heard of any of your patient’s having fake phantom smells?

We have a rather expensive puppy. I would have paid even more if her farts smelled like filet mignon.

Then again, if my dogs farts made me hungry.......
