I'm in the PPE business. There will be a shortage of essential products: respiratory masks, disposable gloves, goggles and face protection for the next 6-12 months. You can't increase demand by 30-40% and expect production to be able to match that. We are seeing an increase in products being imported from China primarily.......and those are being consumed without any hesitation. So, "waiting" until we have enough PPE to open certain business is problematic at best.
The problem with wearing masks is how the CDC rolled out their initial assessment on doing so. For over a month when the pandemic started they said:
They don’t offer significant protection from germs, the most effective models need special fitting in order to work, regular people don’t typically wear them correctly, they’ll give people a false sense of security and cause them to be lax about hand-washing and social distancing.
Now they want us to wear them so we can reopen our economy (interesting shift). I truly believe the CDC is operating on their best intentions, but also understand why many people have been very skeptical about this whole process.
Yeah. That was stupid. I think they were basically just trying to keep people from hording surgical and N95 masks so they intentionally understated the effectiveness. It confuses the message though, and is a public policy mistake, IMHO. I continue to think that having everyone wear masks (even if just cloth masks) in certain higher-risk situations has to offer SOME level of protection. We should still wash hands, avoid touching our faces, and practice social distancing to the extent possible.Quote:

Which begs the question: how many of you out there have masks that cover the eyes? If so, don't wear them while driving.

1. Today's Actual new reported Cases: 444- 789 less than the model which has never been reached despite more testing.
Highest Daily Total Increase in cases since report began on 3/9: 1380 last Monday 4/20 with 56 probable/assumed- A LOT from the Marion County prison. Never anywhere NEAR the projected peak. NEVER
2. Actual TOTAL Hospitalizations: 3,340 (up only 108 yesterday) since reporting began over a month ago. Never any overrun.
Where are the Marion County cases that were supposed to swamp after all that Testing over a week ago?

Summary today. DeWine continues to keep this state under lock & key. Deaths per million 69. Meanwhile Iowa which did no shutdown only has 46 Deaths per million. Obviously there are a lot of factors and variables that go into those stats, but has the total economic shutdown, and DewActon's over cautious reactions seem warranted now after seeing those faulty models and Iowa results? Hmmmmmmm .

If covid were not contagious, or if the only people who were contagious were those with symptoms, there would be no need for people to wear masks so long as they self quarantined if they had symptoms. But that is not the case here. The whole reason for someone to wear a mask is to protect OTHERS from getting the infection if someone is sick but asymptomatic. Masks don't protect the wearer unless they are the N95 masks, but they do provide protection for those around the wearer. Capiche?Quote:

Asking that people where a cloth mask in public places seems like a completely reasonable measure that is pretty universally regarded to help prevent the spread of viruses. Edit: Also there is plenty of proof that masks (even simple cloth masks) play a role in helping to reduce transmission of disease. Saying 'show me the proof' is like saying 'show me the proof the earth is round'. It's universally accepted science. I know that we all aren't big on science all of a sudden (which I don't think will age well), but this is basic medical protocol and has been for 100+ years.

Getting past that: Did you even read the article? It's rife with exceptions including (1) if you think you might have COVID (2) if you are caring for someone with COVID. It also seems to generally focus on wearing medical N95 respirator masks to prevent oneself from getting COVID, not wearing cloth masks to prevent transmission to others. So masks might not work, but go ahead and wear one if you think you might have COVID or will come into contact with someone who has COVID.
The article is also dated Feb 29th and begins with a caveat. In February the medical community was still very much in 'Don't wear masks unless you are a medical professional because we don't have enough of them' mode.
Seems like a pretty clear strawman, to me.

Let's get to the real issue. "More testing needed" is a boolsheet excuse to keep people from earning a living.
Again not doing the opposite of what I am told. Masks are fine if you want them but if you are not washing your hands and wiping down surfaces, that is a much bigger issue. I think its funny that people walk around with masks, but go to the store and touch everything on the shelf with no gloves on. I think you are much more likely to get the disease by hand to mouth than if you are not out wearing a mask. So I agree with keeping your distance, disinfecting everything, frequently washing your hands and staying home if you do not feel well, or have a fever. But yeah I do the opposite of everything I am told, because I don't think people should be forced to wear masks, because one reason, well science says it doesn't really have proof that it helps. My problem is that masks get dirty and peoples hands get dirty, so if you are not frequently disposing them, they can become a germ haven.Quote:
