My college roommate’s first job after was managing a 5th 3rd branch. They had to call him directly because lack finances in his account for that check. Classic and is always a point of conversation. Jerry was actually a good dude.

Why? Because anti-Christian sentiment, and anti-Catholicism most especially, is one of the last forms of acceptable prejudice… and we all know why. Can you imagine the field day the media would have had if he’d called a group of people “Muslim f*gs”? You’re damn right there’d be more ink spilled about it than has been spilled over his anti-Catholicism.

In short, while I fully agree that his homophobic slur was abhorrent, I also have no shortage of criticism for those who are outraged about the homophobia but have not a word to say about his religious discrimination.
Thought you might appreciate the piece from the NY Post (if you didn’t already see it).

Here is an excerpt from the article:

Also, this week, in what seemed a sign of the times, the media were more outraged that Huggins bashed homosexuals than that he bashed Catholics. Is one bigoted bashing more acceptable than the other?

Also, there’s another incident mentioned in the article. I almost lost it (in laughter) watching how ridiculously blown out of proportion that incedent was. It’s the incident where ESPN host John Anderson joked about a Golden Knight’s defenseman’s last name sounding like toilet paper. The defensiveman’s last name is “White Cloud.” Now, I didn’t hear exactly how he said it, but the player named Whitecloud didn’t seem all that offended by it. They have a video clip of reporters asking him about it and then him giving what should have been a 30 second response. Instead, he ends up going on and on for what feels like an eternity. Honest to God, I felt like I was watching an SNL skit. The player was very classy about the entire thing, but the whole things is just so odd. You would have thought they were interviewing a man shot him 10 times and had his child kidnapped.

So why was it such a big deal???? Had the player been Catholic, 100% Caucasian and straight, it likely wouldn’t have been. As if turns out, the defensiveman got his name from his Native American grandfather. It was pointed out that John Anderson had no idea he was even part Native American. WhiteCloud is very light complected, as you can see in the video. It was simply a spontaneous response from a humorous ESPN host trying to make a harmlessly joke… and it likely may have been received that way had that player been fallen into one of the last groups society is allowed to playfully or even not so playfully poke fun at - the white Catholic straight man. Also, had Charles Barkley made the joke, it’s doubtful there is even an incident we are talking about. Apparently, Barkley is one of the remain few individuals on Tv allowed the freedom to attempt harmlessly humorous without repercussions.

Had Anderson’s attempt at humor sounded remotely disrespectful, discriminatory, derogatory… had it come across racist, sexist, homophobic or purposely insensitive, then it would certainly deserve the attention it received.

What may truly make this incident absurd is that “White Cloud” actually is the name of a toilet paper brand. Yes. The reason it sounds like toilet paper is because it actually is. I wonder how much this would have blown up if the defensiveman had the last name Honeycomb instead and John Anderson made a joke about it sounding like a breakfast cereal. I mean, how are we deciding which words are offensive and which ones are not?

It’s really sad how we struggle today as a society to recognize the difference between something that truly is inexcusable… something that is clearly a mean and harmful slur (what Huggins said) and something someone said as a off-the-cuff, lighthearted joke with no intention of offending a person’s race, religion, gender or sexual orientation (what the ESPN host said).

I wouldn't of fired Huggins. It looks bad but he paid X, and apologized. That is enough for me.

Yes, it is. Catholics are pretty much the only faith where it’s acceptable in the media to insult.

Wasnt this a little similar to how Bobby Knight ended at IU?
