The flaw in using the diagnosed cases as the denominator for the fatality rate is that number is artificially low as most of those tested were symptomatic. It’s missing all the people who actually had the virus but didn’t seek medical attention or get tested.

True. There are also plenty of flu cases that go unreported every year that would drive the flu number down as well. I’d be curious to know how many unreported cases of flu they think there are every year.
