Would the NCAA still try to put on March Madness with current designated conference winners(per the conferences) and hold it at smaller venues with no fans, and still make their money?

This unfortunately is not helpful:
The latest news out of the White House is incomprehensibly dire. Politico is reporting that Donald Trump is "reluctant" to give the COVID-19 pandemic an emergency designation, which would provide emergency funding to states and allow a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) response in affected areas, because Trump believes calling it an "emergency" would go against his prior insistence that the coronavirus outbreak was no worse than the yearly flu.
He doesn't want to declare the emergency, said a "Republican who speaks to Trump," because it "contradicts his message." Worse, still, is this news: The coronavirus task force now led by Vice President Mike Pence will be holding off on its own recommendation on whether to declare a national emergency. The reason? They’re waiting on Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.
According to a person "familiar" with the situation, the task force "will not give Trump its final verdict until Jared Kushner, the president’s senior adviser and husband to his daughter Ivanka, finishes his research and comes to a conclusion himself," Politico reports.
So the declaration of emergency allowing the response to an emerging and deadly pandemic will, if one comes at all, be on hold until Trump's son-in-law familiarizes himself with virus research, pandemic response protocols, and other applicable information so that he, himself, can make a decision based on his “research” rather than deferring to the government’s own assembled public health experts.
Upon which Trump may or may not do it anyway, because he believes it would "contradict" his message that his administration has the virus under control....he went up late, and I was already up there.

Trump was clearly worried about the stock market and his ego, but I think he missed a golden opportunity here to ensure both would be in good shape. DeWine has essentially shut down a large chunk of Ohio and he is going to come out smelling like roses. It’s a win-win situation for him politically. If this ends up being nothing serious in Ohio he looks good for preventing badness. If it ends up being very serious he looks good for having hand sight to stop it in its tracks as early as possible and have good damage control. I tend to think he is doing a solid on slowing transmission since most data supports that approach. Good for him and good for Ohio. Now get us some tests....

So are we going to do this to ourselves every winter because there will be new strains of flu virus each year. Here's an interesting review of H1N1 from 10 years ago:

I’ll probably get flamed for this, but I really think the media in the US is doing everything they can to make this hurt the economy and therefore hurt Trump’s chances at reelection. They know Bernie can’t win, and doubt Biden can win. The worse this is, the more it hurts Trump.

And this is why Trump's messaging early on mattered so much. By throwing it out there as a hoax, a media plot against him, and that it was essentially under control while it was rapidly spreading, there is now a percentage of the population that believes that no matter what. So even though Trump announced in an primetime oval office address that it was a serious threat, people will not move off of the original position.

I don't think the majority of people realize what's really going on here. There are so few confirmed cases in Ohio (and somewhat, nationally) because there has been very limited testing. It has given people a sense that "well, it's not here yet, so we're fine" - not the case.
There was a confirmed case in Ohio where the person hadn't been to any impacted countries and that person hadn't been exposed to anyone else that had been sick (I forget the term they used for this type of case), and they still contracted the virus. The CDC stated that in situations like this, it means about 1% of the population probably has the virus (based on their research and trends). With the population of Ohio being 12 million, that's roughly 120,000 people likely infected in Ohio (that's where this new 100,000 number has come from). A stark contrast to the publicly communicated 5.
Knowing this puts a COMPLETELY different perspective on this and starts to make you fill in the blanks as to why everything is being canceled, schools are being called off, and large gatherings of people can't happen. This virus has likely been among us for a month and without any measures, it doubles every 6 days. So it gives you a sense of potentially having half a million to one million people exposed with 2-3 weeks, just in Ohio (and think of what that means nationally).
Because we are just starting the isolation measures now, there is going to be a huge spike before this gets under control (a spike we will likely never get our hands on since there isn't adequate testing). Prepare yourself for 3-4 weeks of this isolation (potentially even longer) and potentially even stricter measures from the government (like what's happening in Italy). Hopefully it doesn't get to that point, but it's certainly a possibility.
As a comparison, China is just now ramping down on this, and it was introduced to them in December I believe. We're in for a rough couple months. Be smart. These measures aren't political anymore (I agree that's likely where they started).Last edited by drudy23; 03-13-2020 at 10:03 AM.
