Looks like Mack and Co had similar reports on Thompson as they took a different big this morning:

Doing some more digging it looks like he took officials to us and Florida. Vandy was at one time thought to maybe be the favorite and was his next scheduled visit, but they dropped out of the race after landing a different big recently.

What's the difference between a "hard" commit and I assume a soft commit?
...he went up late, and I was already up there.

Hard commit is expected to stick. Soft commit is a guy who is on record as having committed, but is still looking around.
That verbage is much more pertinent on the football side where it is very common for kids to commit and keep looking. In basketball when a kid commits 99.9% of the time it's a hard commit.
