That is what was originally thought, but numerous more recent scientific studies have shown that's not at all the case. It is only contagious when an infected person is in close proximity for a prolonged period of time.
The findings of those studies align with what we've actually seen: much lower-than-expected spread in general, and the majority of the cases in areas of dense populations (e.g., people crammed in a subway or working in close, confined quarters).
