They may have been or, at least, their leadership. They were certainly smart enough to be able to do this to our mighty men. That doesn't mean they weren't despicable terrorists. Many of the most notorious murderous scumbags were considered intelligent. I'm thinking of Adolph Hitler (just ask Marge Schott).
They were either very smart or very lucky. If not, it doesn't say much about the readiness, alertness and intelligence of our armed forces.I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I drink 2XS.
