The JAMA mask meta-analysis is a solid compilation of early COVID mask studies. The challenge is that those studies were a combination of observational, not controlled, not intended to study mask efficacy, not representative of public masking conditions, and/or did not consider temporal changes in community spread. It's not to discredit them, just to point out very clear limitations. What it comes down to, is I'll trust the controlled research study that was designed to evaluate masks efficacy over these every day, and twice on Sunday. Not to mention the "real world" data that continually show mask mandates have no impact.

Related but unrelated, the CDC today finally acknowledged that vaccines work (i.e., the vaccinated don't need to wear masks). Now we just need to eliminate the stupid exemptions (airplanes, crowded indoor, etc.). If you are vaccinated, masks are 100%... make it 110% useless, since they are actually counterproductive.

Thanks again for presenting something for discussion, instead of hurdling insults. It seems a lot more... in the Jesuit spirit.
Translation: I’ll believe the studies that correspond with my narrative. Shocking.

I assume that's just posturing? Kind of like the left wing equivalent of the people who won't wear masks anywhere.

I still see it a bit here in NJ, but not a ton. People walking around my neighborhood with masks on when they don't have to come within 20 feet of anyone else unless they go out of their way to do so. I didn't understand it at the height of the pandemic, and I really don't get it now.

So true, I think here in Colorado it has become more of a political stance then Science based and that's sad. I never wore a mask outside and cringe seeing all these kids playing sports wearing them.

A coworker was talking about how the family was getting together for Mother’s Day and I think he said they were going to require everyone to wear a mask inside, even though everyone was fully vaccinated. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I thought that’s what we do here? Heck you can throw in news articles too.

However, MID’s assessment on what constitutes a robust study are accurate. The JAMA stuff you posted are more like good to know and there may be reasons to study further.

He asked for a study, then when shown one, he moves the goal posts because it didn’t fit his narrative. I believe you are a doc so you know why, but to everyone else the above explains why there are little to no randomized controlled trials, and also provided some additional evidence that wearing a mask helps.

This also goes back to one of my very first statements to the anti mask crowd...saying definitely that masks don’t work is completely ignorant, we just don’t know 100% even at this stage in the process, but what I do know is that prior to vaccination, it was propped as a risk mitigating factor, along with all the other processes or tools.

This article also accurately shows why the RCT that MID references as the reason masks don’t work (Danish study) is very faulty and not a superior study to observational studies in spite of random control status.

To all of you who got the vaccine thank you for helping pull the US out of this pandemic. Somebody had to step up to the plate and you did. Hopefully the trend continues and the ship is now headed in the right direction.

To all of you who chose not to get the vaccine you're welcome. It's ok that you weren't quite ready.

I got the vaccine and I don't need some smug, condescending thank you to validate why I made the choice that I did, nor do I feel some sort of moral superiority to my fellow Americans who made a choice not to. I don't begrudge either side because I respect the individual's right to decide what they inject into their bodies.

You believe the studies that correspond to your narrative. I'll believe the stronger studies that correspond with what has actually transpired in the real world.
