I think Gaston will do surprisingly well at the 4. I probably have a minority opinion in this, but I think he has a nice jump shot from 8-10 feet and moves better than a lot of fans think. He can put the ball on the floor and go to the basket. He's been filling the role of an undersized 5. He has rebounded well but struggled to get a shot against bigger players. I think he can get himself into position to rebound well from the 4 position. He can help spread out the defense, allowing Q more room to operate.
I think that if he is given the chance to show these aspects of his game that X will become dynamically a different team, instead of trying to duplicate how it has been playing, without a very key piece that made the earlier style work.

I would actually expect this decently often and think it could be effective. Early in the season, when Kaiser was out and we'd be in foul trouble, we'd see Gaston at the 4. I would almost expect to see this tomorrow against Sanogo and Delgado. Going to be a tough task on the boards, so Tyrique and Gaston in the game would make sense.

Mack should try more lineups with O'Mara or Jones at the 5 and Gaston or O'Mara at the 4. Gates would likely start at the 4. Bernard off the bench at 3.
Combined production of the 4 and 5 has been frustrating, but having both Gaston and O'Mara on the floor might help overcome their deficiencies. One scores better. The other rebounds better.
I know college hoops is trending away from the big men, but asking one big man on the floor to cover every possible big man defensive assignment, every potential rebound, and still score is a lot for some players.
Guys like Gates and Bluiett at the 4 worked better the past couple years because of who was playing the 5, not because they are spectacular 4s. (Hopefully Gates grows a pair and improves.)
This might mean we have to change the game plan a bit, but I'd say if we can open shooters with more big man screens, that would be a good step.
As far as next year, I'd guess that Sumner's chances of the first round a slim to none right now. Even with a chance to get paid overseas, he'd be better off to risk potential injury coming back and playing on a loaded XU team, where he's sure to gain more national exposure.

Stainbrook will get more minutes from here on out, especially when we have foul issues. It is also going to be a great opportunity for players whose performances have drastically fallen off lately to re-establish themselves as major contributors to the team. Fact is, they must.
