The VY Canis Majoris is the size of about 1800-2100 suns, 1.7 billion miles in diameter, and 4900 light years away. Light would take more than 2.7 hours to travel around the star's circumference, compared to 14.5 seconds for the Sun. It would take 7×10 to the 15th power Earths to fill the volume of VY Canis Majoris.

I realize the smartest people on earth are working on this stuff, but I also realize much of what they do is just guess work. I don't trust much of any of what I hear about space because my feeling is that we're like little gnats trying to construct the Empire State building. It is completely futile. I admire the effort though.
