I know that there are plenty of people that despise Coach K, but it's hard to argue that he left the game with grace and his legacy will be completely intact with very little detraction. Unlike Boeheim and Knight that went out kicking and screaming and arguing with the media left and right. Boeheim's record on it's face is one of the best of all time in terms of 20 win seasons, final 4s, conference titles in one of the hardest conferences ever created and so on.. Instead of being revered as one of the best to ever do it, he'll be remembered a colossal prick first and great coach second.

I would describe Boeheim as more of a grump than a prick. I know those two things oftentimes come off as being one and the same, but I actually don't think he's a prick. When it comes to the prickishness of your typical D1 basketball coach, Boeheim is no worse than average, and probably not even average.

I think he wanted to stay, but also knew Syracuse wanted to move on. I can understand not wanting to come out and just flat out say "Well, I wanted to stay, but the University wants to make a change so this will be my last game." Syracuse probably didn't want it announced that way either. His answer could have been better, but I can understand that it was a disappointing spot to be in, and it was a question he didn't want to answer, and a question Syracuse didn't want him to answer. And really...who cares?? He answered a question gruffly and became more gruff the more it was pushed on him. Oh well. Now we know. So, what difference does it make?

I don't think Syracuse wants his shadow there anymore. I get that too. If he remains there in any capacity, he'll still have the ears and attention of the media, and they'd prefer to be able to make decisions without there being any sort of a public focus on "Well, what does Boeheim think of this??"

I think you are probably off base about Boeheim. I think he probably is a prick. I think Syracuse people think he is a prick. I think media members think he is a prick.

Why doesn't the excuse you gave about why Syracuse doesn't want him around apply to Coach K, Roy Williams, and Mike Brey? Duke and UNC have had disappointing years. I haven't heard K or Roy Williams speak publicly on the seasons of Duke or UNC.

I think Syracuse probably doesn't want Boeheim around bc he's a prick and a bully. He already retired once and changed his mind and came back and he probably agreed to play out another contract and then move on. The contract is ending and it is clear he doesn't want to move on and this time Syracuse doesn't want to let him change the plan again. I am sure the last 2 years of being bad doesn't help.

I could be way off base but that is the way that the situation comes across imo.

Speaking of pricks, IU fans still wonder what the Ultimate Prick, Bob Knight think about their Hoosiers. I will never forgive Boeheim for losing to those assholes in the 87 National Championship.

You listed three different people. I think Mike Brey is an exceptionally gracious person (not just as a coach, but as an overall person) who was probably a little bit mistreated himself, but was not going to make a deal out of it.

I don't think either Roy Williams or Mike Krzyzewski wanted to stay, and now that they're gone I don't think they really miss it.

I don't think Boeheim really knows how to do anything else or wants to do anything else. Some people are like that. (Different sport and a COMPLETELY different type of person) but I think Brett Favre just showed up unannounced at Southern Miss's preseason camp one year and asked if he could help. He literally didn't know what he was supposed to do with his life once he couldn't play football, and didn't know what to do if he wasn't around the game, so he showed up at a place that would let him stay around the game.

I am absolutely NOT like that. I already know the exact day I plan to retire and while I love what I do I don't think I'm going to miss it at all once that day comes. I'll probably move to Europe and REALLY not be missing it. But some people can't do that. They just can't leave. Boeheim is like that.

And, is he a prick?? I still don't think so. If anything I think reporters who ask questions they know people don't want to answer and then fixate on how those individuals responded when they did answer seem closer to being pricks than a guy that's just old, and grumpy, and who doesn't give a shit anymore about what the press thinks of him. I'm not saying reporters are full blown pricks...but they do knowingly ask questions that people don't want to answer, or can't answer, at times when they REALLY aren't in the mood to deal with it like right after a season ending loss. Part of me thinks the press already knew he was not going to be back.

Curious how was Brey mistreated ? He got to stay a long time at a low stress job. And maybe he didn't want a lot of fan fare, and a farewell tour.

I kinda thought that when Brey said he was going to retire, and then Notre Dame felt compelled to say he was not retiring, but that they had just decided to make a change, that that was kind of ridiculous. It seemed to me as if ND wanted it known that he didn't actually want to retire and that they were just getting rid of him. I guess it was more of a 'WTF?' than full blown mistreatment, though.
