    Team Mascot / Nickname

I enjoy looking at teams' unusual nicknames (or just lame ones such as when we played the Dolphins, which, I'm sure strikes fear in the hearts of all their opponents).

I mean, what the hell is a Billiken or a Hoya anyway?

The Fighting Irish (a discussion for later) played the Presbyterian Blue Hose recently. I got curious if they were supposed to beat the other team with a blue hose so as not to leave marks...or what! It turns out the HOSE refers to stockings (as in pantyhose?) or just socks.

    From the team website:

“At any rate,” Hammet wrote, “the sports nickname was shortened to 'Blue Hose' in 1954- presumably under the assumption that it sounded somewhat fiercer to carry onto the field of athletic battle.”

    Yep - fiercer. Hose. Really!
    I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I drink 2XS.

Blue Stockings (original name) is not much better.
They are 30 miles away in Clinton, SC.
(you do not pronounce the "T" in Clinton)
...he went up late, and I was already up there.

Billiken is a mythological creature that brings good luck!

This story may have been attached before my time, but wanted to find out the history of the blue blob. I know some are saying what kind of X fan are you not knowing - fair weather I guess. Anyhow, thread had me wondering.

I have heard the myth about the mascot being awarded because of the Crosstown Shootout. Anyone know how that rumor was started?

"The school already had an appropriate mascot with the swashbuckling musketeer D'Artagnan, but Watson thought the large sword-bearing man scared children. So she decided to design a smiling, furry, amorphous character for children to love."

That's funny. When my son was about 4 years old, I took him to a tournament send off for the team, all standing around the bus next to Cintas, waiting for the team to board for the sweet sixteen. My son was scared to death of the blob - no problem with the big D. The only way I could keep him from running away was to put him on my shoulders. We got our picture in the paper....when there was such a thing.

That’s what I thought. Had UC won that year, they would have gotten a red blob.

Golf is a relatively simple game, played by reasonably intelligent people, stupidly.
