The top 3 teams are a combined 21-1. Of those 21 wins, I'd say only one of them was against a consensus, clear cut top 40 team. To Kansas's credit UNC Greensboro and East Tennessee State are good, and perhaps top 40, but beating them at home is something that virtually every team in the top 25 should be able to do without too much of a sweat.
This is one of the things about the polls that I don't like. You can move up by default simply by beating mediocre teams, and you can move down if you lose to top ten teams. But, I don't not like it to the point that I really care too much about it. But there are probably over 40 teams that would be undefeated against Louisville's schedule, so they didn't exactly outperform everyone else to reach the top spot.

We need to play better. We have wins, but they are not impressive wins. Look, folks. Without two *almost* improbable Naji Marshall 3's, the same Naji Marshall that is hitting 20.5% from three range, this team would be 5-3 and absolutely mediocre. We've struggled at home and played very stupidly at times. There are still inexplicable passes, shots from guys who have no business shooting them and regression and underperformance from 2 starters. The bench is starting to look stronger, but things need to improve for us to deserve a ranking.
At least we actually flashed a guy to the foul line vs Lipscomb's zone Saturday. That's a schematic improvement, but there is a lot more to be done."I Got CHAMPIONS in that Lockerroom!" -Stanley Burrell

We are also a wide open 3 away from potentially being 8-0 and being ranked in the top 20.
The what if scenarios kill me..I'm more of the parcells mantra of you are what your record says you are. The team is 7-1 and will be 11-2 or 12-1 going into conference. Does the team have faults? Of course but so does every single team on december 2nd.

Substance aside, your post represents about 1000000 times the analysis any voter is putting in. It would be cool if Xavier was #1 (I think that's the last program history to be made in the polls, right?), but outside of that I really don't care about the AP/coaches.

Not a single AP top 25 vote for DePaul. By no means am I saying they're as good as Louisville, but with an 8-0 record and three true road wins against Iowa, BC, and Minney, one could easily argue that they've outperformed Louisville up to this point.

I can’t say I’m completely satisfied, there are some things to clean up. That being said, 7-1 with a loss to Florida is about where I’d thought we would be. X didn’t start winning last year until they committed to playing defense for 40 minutes. We got wins they weren’t always pretty. This team is pretty much the same guys. This team is going to succeed on the defensive end of the court. This version of the Muskies will never be a consistent, lights out three point shooting group. They have to value each possession (room for improvement) and defend. They are playing together, no quit in them I think they will be more than fine.
