One question- why does the Derby always get 20 horses with a waiting list and then the Preakness and Belmont will usually get less than 10? I get it that the Derby is the biggest race, but if you run in the Derby, why not the other two races? For breeding purposes, is the Derby for some horses primarily something to have on the horse's resume?

I am pleased to report that I have found the answers to my questions.

Game Winner: My Baffert; were it not for a nose in the Rebel (Omaha Beach) and / or half a length in the Santa Anita Derby (and given Omaha Beach's scratch) he'd be the 3-1 favorite this morning. Two year old champion. Spectacular breeding; safest win bet in the field if not the kind of favorite we've grown accustomed to in recent years.

Tacitus: Has won last three at 1m, 1 1/16; 1 1/8 with steadily improving speed ratings. Ran through trouble last out in his winning Wood Memorial -- which will serve him well in the crush to turn one at CD. Has already won on off track, so any rain won't be an issue. Trainer Bill and Jock Jose Ortiz are top shelf -- and Mott is a classy act worth pulling for.

    ###

Tax: My bomb. There are a number of noteworthy horses running today without odds that shout Bet Me. Two wins, never off the board in five races. Last three ( 3 ) races at 1 1/8, with another at 1 1/16. He's fast with special ability to run through the middle of the race -- I love tactical speed in the KYD; Post position #2, starting from gate #3 with scratches. He needs to break smartly, get rail position and not get into a speed brawl. Use tactical speed to move at the quarter pole. 20-1 morning line; 37-1 this morning. I'm using him in exotics.

Spinoff: This Pletcher longshot is live.

    ###

    Game Winner 16 W/P
    Tacitus 8 W/P

    ###

The Exacta is my bet today. Speedy, improving horses that can finish up.

Exacta Game Winner & Tacitus over Tax, By My Standards, Tacitus, Code of Honor, Win Win Win, Game Winner, Roadster, Spinoff; 8,16 / 2, 3, 8, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19

    ###

Trifecta Box: Game Winner, Tacitus, Tax 2/8/16 Box

    Go X!

    Good Racing Luck!
    Warmly,
    "Mel"

So, what do you think of the ruling that decided the winner?

I don't know anything about the rules of horse racing....but I took a last second $2 flyer on Country House...so winning $132 on a $2 investment doesn't suck.

According to the rules, I guess it’s the right call. However, it’s an animal running on a wet track in the turn. I don’t think the jockey intentionally blocked anyone. A friend who knows horses said the horse can move towards the rail and it’s not a foul if there’s contact or a block. However, the horse can’t move away from the rail. Seems stupid. Moving away gives you more distance to cover.

Golf is a relatively simple game, played by reasonably intelligent people, stupidly.
