I think Phil’s “interpretation” of the rules is technically correct, I don’t think it’s in the spirit of the rules. It all depends on which rule you want to enforce. The USGA went with 14-5, which is how Phil was thinking. Guess they could have tried 1-2 or 33-7 and given him a DQ. Didn’t John Daly do the same thing a number of years ago, maybe at Pinehurst?

Golf is a relatively simple game, played by reasonably intelligent people, stupidly.

Just like we had it: Berger and Finau in final group.

Mickelson is like third to last. No point in DQ'ing him.

But what would you do if he were in third to first???

I agree not to DQ, but that was quite the gaffe.

Reminds me of a player going out-of-bounds with the ball, and he turns and bounces it off the defender's leg.
...he went up late, and I was already up there.

A better comparison is 12 players on the field in football - was it intentional or just the 12th guy failing to get off the field before the snap. It didn't seem premeditated per se, but I can certainly see the argument for a DQ (especially if Dustin Johnson were to pull this stunt while he melted down yesterday).

This is certainly a 180 compared to scoring in last year's US Open at Erin Hills.

I don’t think he would have done it if he were 3rd to first. It was clearly done out of a cumulative frustration and maybe even to send a friendly “F you” to the PGA for the ridiculousness of Shinnecock this week.

I think it’s overblown and a 2 stroke penalty is appropriate. He still missed that putt AND the one coming back! And a public shaming by the stick-up-the-butt traditionalists.
