    Great Start

These ladies have put together a pretty strong starts to the 16-17 season, 9-3 and a winning start to the conference season!

Who has seen them in person? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Most importantly, what is the forecast for them proceeding through the Big East?

The one game I saw in person so far was the Crosstown Shootout against UC - their free throw shooting and ability to take care of the ball was better than I've seen in recent memory. The ladies were coming off of a 1-2 trip in Las Vegas with losses to Oklahoma and Southern Miss but won their finale against Kennesaw State.

As for last night, what made that win sweet was a 14-point comeback that began in the 3rd quarter. Their next test is Friday night at Creighton - that game will be televised on the Big East Digital Network (accessible via Fox Sports Go).

Unfortunately, I haven't made any trips yet to Cincy this season. Great wins over UC and Michigan, mostly wins in the OOC, and a victory over Providence on the road to start the Big East. Undefeated at home. A very good start indeed.

I look forward to seeing them during the Hall of Fame weekend vs St. John's on Jan 8th. A couple of the greats will be inducted: Amber Harris and Ta'Shia Phillips. Upcoming games include BE Digital Network and a CBS Sports Network game. There are several weekends when both the men and women play ... good dates to make the trip.

The key players are juniors or seniors (Fincher is a redshirt sophomore point guard). Gaffney is one of the better players I've seen ... great looking shot, she can drive, and she plays with a toughness. The 3rd guard getting 30 minutes is Marquia Turner who is the 2nd leading scorer on the team which is the surprise stat for me. Blackwell is a 4th year senior ... a favorite as a fan. Sometimes, she can be hot or cold. Trivia fact: her mother was the 1st woman to dunk in a college game. Three big's seem to share most of the remaining minutes: Schaefer, Aijanen, and Partlow (redshirt soph). I think how these three play especially defense and rebounding will be a key to the conference.

Conference forecast? Coaches had Xavier ranked 9th preseason in the Big East. Upperclass leadership! ... My prediction ... they will finish in the top half of the conference ... perhaps higher, but probably grouped with several teams behind DePaul. I also predict post-season play.

What do you think of the quarters versus halves in the women's game?
We've come a long way since my bench seat at the Fieldhouse!

I generally don't like these kinds of rule changes, but actually, I feel the game moves along a bit better with quarters. So, no complaints.

I wonder if you get a more energetic pace when it is broken up this way. Is it enough of a break to provide real rest?

I'm not a fan. I think it interrupts the flow of the game. Not just because of the extra break, but the fact teams insist on holding for the last shot every quarter.
The quarters also seem to create more situations where teams aren't in the bonus when they start fouling at the end of the game, leading to more of those awkward possessions.
I think the only rule change I like is the elimination of the 1-and-1.

They're off to a better start at Creighton - they're up 8-2 midway through the first quarter. Bluejays are ice cold, although Xavier not allowing any shots near the rim.
