True.
But, reality is that there's always some community out there willing to chip in for a new arena / stadium. So long as that's the competition, you can either keep up with the Jones' or lose out on opportunities for pro sports. I can't tell anyone the right way to feel on the subject, but the idea of "this should be good enough" doesn't fly when someone else is willing to do better.
I'm hopeful smarter people than I can work this out so that people who benefit from a new stadium or visit / use it will pay the cost without raising taxes on everyone or cutting services. Cincinnati missed out on the NBA and the NHL -- we're getting a chance to be a 3 pro-sport town again. I think there should be a way to make it happen by being creative.

What a sensational headline.
1. A plan hasn't been released. How can it be extortion? Estimates I've heard from the club are that as low as 33% of funding would come from taxes.
2. The location hasn't been finalized. Cincinnati can't be extorted if it's in Kentucky.

I have a problem with direct taxation of citizens for sports stadiums. When they're done via Tax Increment Financing (like is being planned here), where only money from increased value of land improved around the stadium is going to stadium construction, I have WAY less of a problem. That actually makes sense, since it's using the tax money generated by the stadium to pay off the stadium (vs. increasing taxes or dipping into other programs/funds).
I genuinely see that as a win-win.
