Doing almost exclusive family law I can tell you that even people with no means will argue over petty things. I once was forced to do a full day hearing because the other side wanted possession of a dresser that had been thrown out (because the face of two of the drawers had rotted out). They claimed my client had disposed of marital assets. I argued even if that's the case, the dresser was worth $0.

I hope they didn't pay you for your days work with a used dresser... or a goat and two chickens, though that might actually have some value.

I'd have to look back, but I'm sure there was some involuntary pro bono work done on that case.
