Ghana made it to the last 16 in 06 World Cup and Quarterfinalists at the last World Cup, they are way better than the #32. The US has struggled in European World Cups in 90, 98, and 06. However as hosts in 94 round of 16, Quarterfinalists in 02, and round of 16 last World Cup. US Under 17 team beat the Czechs 3-0 in their first game at the Under 17 World Cup. Their technical level was very high, more like a Continental European Team or South American Team. All three goals were superb so the future looks brighter.

First off Emp, Dempsey scored against Jamaica. Important distinction.
And really, if you want to compare this to college basketball, the US is more like Xavier than anything else. Right outside the top top countries.
We should always get out of qualifying stages. Always. Okay, except maybe when we get a draw like 2006. But really always.
I don't care what list you put together in terms of what you think is wrong with our national squad. If that list doesn't include more players playing on Champions League rosters, we will never reach a semi or finals of a World Cup. We handle our young players for the most part, horribly. We do not develop defenders in this country. Our professional league has recently begun building academies where real development is. Our best players need to stop playing high school soccer, unless they really want to play with their friends.
I'm not that impressed our under 17 won the other day. All that matters is what they do when they hit the national team. We have seen this play out before. If we want to base the future on those results, then we are in serious trouble, because Mexico's team killed us.
We just need to continue to develop players. We need to at least make the Gold Cup Finals and we need to get out of group stages in the World Cup. That's the only way we will develop players we need in order to compete with those top tier teams.Award Winning Poster Since 2015

Agree with pretty much everything. Soccer in Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain etc...is THE sport period. Almost ALL of their best athletes play soccer. In the US, we have 3-4 sports that disperse our best athletes. Baseball, football, basketball and now lacrosse is getting really big. I dont see the US ever getting to the elite stage with soccer, I think the best we can hope for is good solid showing internationally and an occasional deep run in the world cup. I'm surprised with have the MLS and the success that we have had. I would love to see the demographics of who is going to the games and how much the mexican immigration explosion the last 10 years has impacted attendance,

This is the key problem with US Soccer. 8 years of high school and college is a terrible way to develop a soccer player.
A 13-year-old in England who is a good prospect goes to a professional club's academy system.
An American who spends 8 years in school is way behind the typical European/South American kid by the time they get out of college.

In case you are wondering, there is better weed in the US than in Jamaica.
So we win in soccer and weed!
