It is NOT all about playing for national championships. There is far more to college football, and college sports in general, than just being a national champion contender. Playing well enough and winning enough games to go to a bowl game has been a big incentive, especially if those bowl games were in warm weather locations. So there wasn’t 100,000 fans in the seats and a national TV audience. That doesn’t mean the fans and the teams weren’t having fun and taking things seriously at the same time. If UC falters, there is a chance that UTSA still could end up in big bowl game, perhaps the Fiesta Bowl, as the top Group of 5 ranked team. Or perhaps another good bowl as an undefeated team. So that last game was surly relevant to them and their fans, even if most people around the country didn’t pay any attention. Even for those teams and players not looking at stellar seasons, or playing big time football, these are still great experiences that they will cherish all their lives. Sure, I’d like to see the playoffs expanded (I favor 8 teams for several reasons) but mainly just because I’d like to see more teams and players get the experience of playing in those kinds of games, not because I realistically think that there much chance of an 8 seeded team actually winning against the top seed.
