OOC Scheduling Thread (for all teams, not just X)

Louisville has now made three headlines. The game against Kentucky won't be at it's tradional(ish) time of being the Saturday after Christmas, but will be on a Tuesday night earlier in the year.

They've also agreed to a six year deal with Memphis, which used to be a really big rivalry prior to Louisville joining the Big East (and then the ACC) and deciding that they just didn't want to play Memphis anymore. I don't think there's any heat left in this one, so it will just be a regular OOC series, but it's still a really good series.

I just saw that Louisville and UC are going to play a two year series at Freedom Hall and at the Heritage Bank Center. Why they wouldn't just do a regular home and home I don't know, but...whatever.

Purdue's OOC schedule will feature Kentucky, Alabama, Iowa State, Marquette, Auburn, and the Baha Mar Tournament with Wake Forest and Memphis. That's seven showcase OOC games. I think Auburn's scheduling philosophy is starting to catch on!!

The Jimmy V Classic will be between Florida and UConn. A bit interesting since it's the last two national champs.

And, I THINK Maryland v Georgetown is finally back!! The two used to play regularly, and one year they played in an exempt event in DC on what was Georgetown's normal home court, but since it was part of some other event the tickets were split. After that, they couldn't agree on whose turn it was to play at home next, and the series has been halted for like thirty years. They did play a series during the Gavitt Games, and it was awesome, but other than that they haven't played. They did play a closed scrimmage last year, and I think they are going to finally play again this year and get it back to being a regular series.

Ha, Louisville and Cincinnati just poured tons of money into nice arenas (well, Louisville's is nice!), and the universities have decided to play in shitty old arenas instead?!? Some sort of 80s flashback? At least the 80s were good for Louisville. Not sure why UC would want to go back to the 80s!

Yeah Purdue’s OOC is pretty stout. The Kentucky game will be good tuneup for the season. As it will only be an exhibition game

I didn't realize the Kentucky game was an exhibition game.

Maryland and Georgetown agreed to a four year H&H starting this year at Maryland. The two schools are only 20 miles apart. It only took 45 years for a regular home and home to resume after one of the more intriguing and one of the longest lasting feuds caused it to come to an end. When they played the two games during the Gavitt Games the atmosphere was really intense, and while I'd heard about what had happened, this was the first time I realized just how heated it had become. John Thompson called out his own son for agreeing to play them making it known he was not in favor of resuming it.

But, in all practicality, this series is a no-brainer and the two should play every year. It's starting to look like they now will.

Xavier at Iowa will be Friday November 14 per Jon Rothstein. Appears to be just under 7 hour drive from Cintas Center.

If Georgetown and Maryland can get back to playing each, maybe we could restart Dayton. The problem was mainly with Mack. He's been gone a long time.

That's typically the time of year when the Gavitt games were played. I feel a little disappointed that Xavier didn't get to face off against Angry Fran.

Double header of BYU v Villanova and Florida v Arizona on opening night (Nov 3). That’s not a bad way to kick off the season.

Texas vs Duke in Charlotte on Nov 4th. I don't know if that's official yet, but from what I understand it's pretty close.

My biggest complaint about college hoops was the shitty uninteresting start to the season. Now that trend seems to be changing. But, again, if you look at all the big games that have been scheduled for that first week of the season, nearly all of them involve an SEC team. I never thought I'd say this, but the SEC is making college basketball better and more popular!!

Sooner or later (probably later) the two will play again. Maryland and Georgetown is back, but it took 45 years and John Thompson and Lefty Driesell both had to..yunno...die. If that one can resume, then any series can!

When X and UD do finally play again, I don't think it will matter to that many people. It will be a good OOC game, but that's all it will be. There will be no real rivalry or interest beyond that. If you were to poll UD as to which Big East team they'd most like to play, Xavier probably comes in 4th behind UConn, Marquette (who they do have a series with), and Villanova, and pehaps even 5th with Saint John's now being what they are. If you ask most X fans what non P4 team they'd most like to play, it's Gonzaga, and everyone else is such a distant second that it almost doesn't even matter.

No students at either school have ever been to an X v UD game. No students at either school knew any upperclassmen who were ever at an X v UD game. No one under the age of 35 in either fanbase thinks of it as having ever been a rivalry at all. Whatever reasons existed to continue the rivalry don't exist anymore. There's no storyline or ongoing off the court administrative feud like there was between Maryland/GTown, or Houston/Texas, or Louisville/Memphis, or Kansas/Missouri (which did ultimately resume), to where people really continue to care. The two just quit playing after conference realignment. No one stabbed anyone in the back, or reneged on anything, or publicly trashed the other, or anything like what happened with those other series. Anyone who has a strong opinion about this, whether it's wanting it back or not wanting it back, they all have one thing in common. They're old. Everyone else would simply look at it as being the same as most other OOC games if/when it is ever played again. It would create the same amount of ripples that playing Saint Louis or VCU would create.

Dayton did stab X in the back pre A10. Dayton & Marquette left the MCC to join the Great Midwest, which left X with a bunch of no names. And Xavier fans were treated pretty bad @ UD during the A10 years, including car vandalism etc. So screw them

Good points.

Imagine if the roles were reversed and Dayton had made it into the Big East and Xavier was still stuck in the A10 (not even conceivable, given the differences between the two programs, but I digress).

Do any of you honestly believe that Dayton would want to start it back up with us?

It's not about a past rivalry or what may or may not make a good OOC game for Xavier.

It seems like a lot of folks don’t have UD alums in their work or social circle. Xavier is the #1 desired game by the UD faithful. Tons of UD alums and students live in Cincinnati. I disagree with Brew - imho UD would choose Xavier by a large margin as most desired Big East team to play if they answered truthfully. I think if Xavier wanted this game it would happen very quickly.

This was in 1993. More time has elapsed between Y2K and now than what had elapsed between the moon landing and then. And, while I’m sure the older fans are still angry about it, people under the age of 35 just aren’t all that worked up about it. And it looks as though they played it as an OOC game after that happened, so…

So I guess what we have is an older generation that doesn’t want to renew the rivalry while liking to think Dayton does want to resume it and is pissed that X won’t do it. Okay, I guess. I’m sure that’s how some of their older generation feels as well. But most who were born after 1990 and weren’t even 3 years old when UD left C behind, and were never in college when the X and UD were actually playing really just don’t care about it. Why would they?? Since joining the A10, the stretch Dayton ever had where for multiple seasons they won NCAA Tournament games and sort of became recognizable nationally happened after X had left the conference. And if/when they do play again it won’t be anything like what Maryland v Georgetown will be like. There aren’t two HOF coaches that continued to take shots at one another after the two teams stopped playing. It just kinda died.

Fuck Dayton let them rot. It would only help Dayton to renew the rivalry, it could only hurt x so fuck them. Hope they rot in that shit conference for eternity

That certainly didn’t help, but even if that hadn’t happened I don’t think the series would have resumed. I also don’t think the hate is anywhere near what it was. If they’re not going to hate X then it really isn’t worth playing. The series can be renewed, but probably not the rivalry. The heat wouldn’t be nearly as hot. And, what’s the fun in that??

We probably don't play them for the same reasons they don't play Wright State.

Probably more like why Creighton doesn’t play Wichita State. That used to have quite a bit of heat too, and similar to X v UD they haven’t played since going to the Big East. And if/when they ever play again it won’t be anywhere near the same.

Sweet 16 2 years ago, beat Texas in the tourney last year. Hired an up and coming coach with Big 10 experience. BE mid tier is a dream for essentially every other school with X’s profile. X has done quite a bit.

They had a HELL of a run with Gregg Marshall and damn near made the national title game one year. A Final Four, followed by finishing the regular season ranked #1 (but unfortunately losing early in the tournament) to another top 25 year where they beat Kansas and made it back to the Sweet Sixteen.

There's a part of me that wonders why even the baseball team won't play Dayton but they'll play UC, Miami and Wright State home and away on a regular basis (and not just during the Joe Nuxhall Classic).

George Washington and William & Mary are going to renew their old rivalry from the SoCon days!! I know that this is very exciting news for everyone as the two have only met three times since the 1970s!!

But there is some news that's even more exciting than that!!!

Penn, La Salle, Merrimack, and Hofstra will all play in an in-season tournament at the Palestra!

To be fair, first I made them. They pretty much sucked before I moved here.

Now, what I REALLY ruined was their baseball program. I moved to Wichita in 2011. Here is a list of Wichita State's regular season conference championships in baseball: 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010.

That's it. That's the list.

My question....what happened to all the money that Koch was giving to the university and basketball there? Did that money just stop once Marshall left? Id have thought that once nil became a thing that theyd be rolling.

I think they used to do that!

Georgetown and GW has been dormant since 1982. I believe there were a few years where the two could have possibly played in the old BB&T Tournament (or whatever it was called), but it never played out to them facing each other.

Charles Koch has no interest in the NIL stuff. He wants a return on his investments. I think there's a lot of Koch money that goes to Wichita State's innovation campus (a pretty impressive institution). Chase Koch (his son) seemed somewhat interested in WSU's success, but he's a Texas A&M grad. Steve Feilmeier was the biggest money behind the Gregg Marshall extension, but he has since retired as CFO. I assume he's still a relatively large contributor, but he's not the kind of guy who can single-handedly make them competitive. The president of the business I support was always a big contributor/fan, but he's seemingly lost interest. I can't remember the last time he even mentioned WSU.

The last decade has been the lost decade when you compare it to the prior 3. You can try to sugar coat it all you want, the program has taken a dip.

I cannot stand the "BE mid tier is a dream for essentially every other school with X's profile" stance - what a weak statement. Again, just because other programs have been worse doesn't mean what's happened here the last decade is good enough.

None of us will be happy if the next 10 years are like the last 10. And we all know it.

Beat Texas in the NCAA Tournament last year is seriously supposed to be considered an accomplishment?
