Joe Deters- Xavier

I thought about putting this in the Politics thread, and Mods if you think it belongs over there, please adjust, but I am extremely impressed by our President Colleen. She is standing up for free speech and free exchange of thought…no matter where it leads. This lady has Steel Ovaries!
In this controversy over Ohio Supreme Court Justice Joe Deters accepting a voluntary position of “Justice in Residence” at XU, Prez has come out strongly that she won’t be strong armed by a Woke Mob, unlike other Universities have been. Some of us have had the chance to interact with her over meals, and it is bracing to see that she is following up what she has said privately with public action as to keeping Open Conversation, OPEN. People are allowed to disagree and not be shouted down intimidated, or have their legitimate speeches or appearances cancelled because some mouthy militants don’t like it. High props and applause President Hanycz!

”He (Deters) is a bit of a lightning rod for controversy, I think it's fair to say," Hanycz said. "I've only been here a short time, but I'm picking up on that and I embrace that. I have a very, very strong view about universities. They cannot be places of groupthink. Universities must be marketplaces of ideas where we are forced to encounter ideas and views and perspectives that not only make us think but ideally make us uncomfortable. And that's what I am hoping to have."

Wow!!! Three cheers to President Hanycz! Actually encouraging open and civilized debate on a college campus. Such a radical......:biggrin:

We got to meet President Hanycz in Kansas City Friday night. Super approachable, down to earth, and poised. Don’t want to overplay a five minute interaction, but there wasn’t an ounce of hubris or arrogance. That in addition to the above anti-woke is a pretty uncommon (unfortunately) these days.

Standing ovation!

More universities should adopt her position and welcome things that some might not want to hear.

So I've picked up that some XU faithful don't like Deters. What's the issue? As far as I know he was a pretty good prosecutor and tough on crime and criminals? Isn't that what he was elected to do? I'm confused. Someone please enlighten me.

What is a prosecutor to do?

He picks up the process once the arrests have been made? Is there any shred of proof that he targets/treats certain groups and is racist? Does he treat whites differently than blacks or hispanics or asians?

Or is this all optics and perception?

"Some XU faithful".........one of the individuals, and maybe one of the most outspoken, who signed the petition to ban Deters is an English professor at UC.

Google "Ohio Treasurer Joe Deters and Matt Borges." Yes, the same Matt Borges found guilty of multiple felonies in the recent $60M bribery scandal. As my seventh grade teacher said, "Birds of a feather flock together." Joe scampered away from Columbus after the scandal involving the Treasurer's office and retreated to the safety of Rethuglican Hamilton County where he served as prosecuting attorney until "miraculously" picked to be Ohio Supreme Court Justice, having exactly no judicial experience. Make your own decision as to whether he should be lecturing at XU.

Look, I don't blame some of the students on campus at least trying to make their opposition known for statements like that. They also had to know that words alone were not going to disqualify Deters from being named "justice in residence" on campus. He's not inciting violence like other leaders of the Republican party have done in recent years. He's not exactly Milo Yanoupolis (sp?), for example.

In other ways, Deters was lucky to be appointed to the Supreme Court - the political demographics of Hamilton County are changing. By and large he completed commendable service as Hamilton County Prosecutor, but it wouldn't have shocked me to see him eventually lose that race had he not moved on.

My question is this: Does everything the university does have to be in line with the catholic teaching?

Universities all over the country invite contrary viewpoints on their campuses. When I went to X, it seemed they were trying to teach me to think, to form opinions, and to be able to defend my opinions.

If you are spoon fed information from similar sources with similar viewpoints, you are going to get more of the same. That isn't what Xavier University is about. It isn't what most colleges or universities are about.

A couple points:

People get selected to be judges with no prior judicial experience. You need to look no further than one state west to find that Indiana appointed a non-judge to our supreme Court a few years back. Non Judges bring a perspective to the appellate benches, that current judges may not have. It's a good thing to consider to keep your Court diverse and flexible to institutional change.

Anyone of note coming to lecture at Xavier is a plus in my book. Cornell West has come and given speeches at Xavier. The University is considering (or at least was) a proposal to become home of Speaker Boehner's official papers from his time in Congress. My point is, that we have all become victims of echo chambers and algorithms that feeds us our preferred point of view. Many never even take a look at other points of view. To me, that's not what education is about. I'm very happy that President Hanycz wants to continue this at Xavier. I may not always like the message, but I appreciate the opportunity to experience it and make my own conclusions. Students (and Alumni) are the total of their experiences. I hope Xavier continues to provide experiences and allow students to continue to come to their own conclusions.

This is very cute..actually one of the better clever nicknames I've seen in a while. Now on to the actual facts: Hamilton County has voted of 58% Democratic in the past several cycles. It seems that if Deters was going to run from the Feds (because that always works) to the comforts of a Republican County, it wouldn't be Hamilton.

As someone that spent most of grade school, all of high school, most of college, and several years living and working in Hamilton County, it does sadden me to see the $**t show that Hamilton Co. and the Cincinnati City Council have become. On the plus side though, I get a front row seat from just across the Ohio River. Sure we have our problems over here too, but nothing like what I’m seeing from there.

I will say that I am very happy that the Xavier President has basically told the partitioners that she wasn’t going to cave to their pressure, and that a free exchange of ideas and thoughts is going to be the path that Xavier University will take under her watch. A step in the right direction that hopefully others will follow.

I don't see how any of these issues from 20 years ago conflict with what President Hanycz is hoping to accomplish.

As far as what did or didnt happen with the situation above, Deters wasn't charged with any crime? So guilty by association? LOL Thats what damn near every politician/public office figure in this country takes part in every day?

Deters had zero culpability in that case. Even the borderline Socialist Cleveland Plain Dealer placed the blame where it should have been- on Frank Grutadauria’s Con Man shoulders. He was slick and conned Borges who was basically pled to malfeasance and got probation. Deters was never implicated at all by anyone. Even very smart people have been conned by “Investment Advisors” at times.

And Deters did a fine job at it. He was Treasurer from 1999-2005, during which time the State of Ohio had a AA+ Credit rating-higher than Illinois and Indiana and equal to Michigan. Seems as if he fulfilled his responsibility very well despite your Blue Glassed Strawman argument.

Can we go back to the beginning. What in the world is a Justice in Residence? Sounds like something someone just made up like a superhero title.

A Justice in Residence is actually a thing. Though it has different titles. For instance Judge Hamilton of the 7th Circuit (located in Chicago) has his official office in Bloomington, Indiana on the campus of the Mauer School of Law School. When Court is not in session in Chicago, he lectures classes and supports initiative around that campus.

I'm glad X has an opportunity for something like this.

It’s not unheard of at many universities, but usually ones that have Law Schools. It’s also not unheard of for universities to have Artists, Writers, etc. in Residence Positions. Some fill if on a rotating basis where guests are brought in on a regular basis, others may have longer term commitments.

Does Dana's have a Patron in Residence program?
If so, where can I get an application?
