My 16 year old got a positive test result Monday morning. Wife was negative. Had the daughter and youngest son tested Monday and wife re-tested. Youngest (12) tested positive. Daughter and wife again negative. 16 year old had headache and body aches for 2 days. Was fine by the time he tested. 12 year old asymptomatic. Someone who works for me (probably) had COVID recently. She was exposed to her sister and nephew who both tested positive. She was tested the next day and tested negative. About a week later she developed symptoms (extreme fatigue, mild shortness of breath). She got tested again, and again tested negative.
Still - seems hard to believe she didn't have COVID based on the timing of her confirmed exposure and subsequent development of symptoms. Makes you wonder about testing, and if some people just don't shed the virus in nasal swabs.
Outside? Again, without symptoms what’s the point? It shouldn’t change the quarantine time if it was a high risk exposure. Unless you’re doing daily/frequent tests like NBA/NFL etc it gives a possible false sense of security to have a negative test.Quote:

Ok... I get the curiosity, but a positive test hardly confirms immunity either. I guess I just think it’s not great medical advice to test asymptomatic people who are already in a quarantine. Unless we could contact trace and test everyone all at once nothing changes other than burning another test and potentially having a false negative. The dance team and basketball team then gets tested? And their families? And they all quarantine while waiting on test results? That’s quite a Pandora’s box of testing I’m not sure our system is capable of handling. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a shortage of tests in the next couple weeks.
You test for contact tracing purposes and to prevent spread. If person x is in contact with person y who tested positive x should quarantine for 10-14 days no matter what their test results are, just to be safe. If x gets tested and it comes back negative, then no further contact tracing is needed. If x tests positive though, then anyone who came into close contact with x for 15 or more minutes since x was in contact with y would need to quarantine and get tested themselves. You're looking to close the loop on who could have caught the virus in this particular person to person chain. Obviously the testing isn't 100% foolproof (nothing is) but testing and quarantine is the best thing we have until the vaccines come out.Quote:

In theory this works but the disease too widespread now to implement this. Because there is presymptomatic and asymptomatic spread it is impossible to close the loop. Implement this with the scenario Nigel or Go are in: 2-3 kids who participate in sports that come in close contact with other kids on their teams. You are then testing 30+ kids to see if they are positive, which may not even be close to accurate based on timing. This is why sports that don’t have widespread testing circles is not a good idea. I am not trying to pass judgement on this at all, a parents decision to have their kids play indoor sports now is their decision. But this whole scenario is the main reason we have decided our kids will not be playing indoor sports this year. It is likely going to be a driver in disease spread and nearly impossible to contact trace when everywhere you turn there’s a positive test.Quote:

Problem is timeline, at what point is your asymptomatic child considered a close contact? CDC says within 2 days which is really close to your timeline of Sunday practice to Tuesday test. If your son tested positive today, current CDC recommendations says it was not a close contact and the team doesn’t need to quarantine. Just seems silly to make testing policies and guidelines based on when we test asymptomatic people. Just my opinion of course which could be very wrong...Quote:

CDC has a silly standard, then. If my one son got sick Monday, and the other was around him all weekend (probably significant time spent wrestling), and the other did not get tested until Tuesday, it's silly to say, well it's more than 48 hours from practice! If he has it now, there's about a 95% chance he had it on Sunday. Particularly since he's been quarantining since Monday morning.
