Started Orange is the New Black.
Good but probably the most overrated show of the year...it's pretty much just like Weeds, its clever and entertaining but no real substance. A very very very watered down version of Oz, which was one of the best shows ever in my opinion.
I'm still watching under the Dome (even thought that is a bit of a threadjack). I can't think of a single Stephen King story that translated well to TV. The Stand was ok, but the book was so much better. Tommyknockers was horrible. Haven on SyFy is enjoyable, but it is maybe 3% inspired by the Colorado Kid.
Anyone who hasn't seen Oz needs to give it a go. Dark and engaging.
I think I've agreed with you on this before. Good writers/directors can do really good things with Stephen King stories--Deloris Claiborne, Green Mile, Shawshank. But either because of the writers/directors or because Stephen King himself has more direct involvement with them, the TV stuff doesn't pan out. Langoliers is a classic example. The short story had me sitting on the edge of my seat wanting to know how the story would pan out but the TV movie put me to sleep. I think that's why I love Haven. It's 'based on' not a direct telling.
NOTE: in general I wouldn't recommend Deloris Claiborne to guys. It's the bonds between the women that made it so compelling for me. And while I probably shouldn't stir up controversy by mentioning a Kathy Bates flic on this board, if you do check it out, be assured she remains completely clothed.
Very much agreed with this. To go along with that: The Shining, The Mist, Stand By Me, Misery. All incredible adaptations. Meanwhile Pet Semetary, one of the scariest books I've read has a laughable adaptation.
Under the Dome just got picked up for a second season which will be interesting as I thought this was a standalone miniseries...
I just "discovered" Breaking Bad. Took about three days to get through Season 1. Good stuff, although I have a hard time getting Malcolm in the Middle out of my head when watching Bryan Cranston in that role.
You're in for quite the ride, Go. When I first watched season one, I thought it was so incredibly awesome. Then I just realized it keeps getting better and better and better. You'd be doing yourself a favor by going on a full binge and catching up before 8/11. You'll fly right through it. I will reserve judgement until I see how they wrap it up, but I'd say it's on pace to be my favorite drama ever.
Easily the best show of the past 10 years. I'm with PMI in that I'll have to reserve judgment until the show has concluded but potentially could be my favorite tv show ever....and fortunately/unfortunately I watch a shitload of television (but I also work for a TV station so there's that excuse).
Fans of Breaking Bad should definitely check out Homeland...much better on a binge watch than week to week basis.
