For the most part, expiration dates are an arbitrary number set by the manufacturer which has been tested by them to make sure the product will maintain its integrity. Then they give that timeframe to the FDA to do their own testing. Since we needed them in a short period, I assume the manufacturer had to submit a short date so it could be tested and ultimately get to market.

In order to prolong or extend the expiration date, the manufacturer will have to do those test and FDA will need to confirm their findings. Again assumptions and hope really, the manufacturer is probably already in this process.

It wasn’t until mid August of this year when the Post wrote a story on the lack of knowledge of mAbs, so the administration sent out Fauci to do damage control. Ironically Fauci basically just said they are a good option and he was surprised they were underutilized. I’m sorry but what?

One of the positives of this thread, most people who post here already knew about mAbs because of praise other posters gave them. IMO this administration has done a very good job promoting the vaccine (minus the we vs them). Unfortunately, they have taken a one size fits all on their messaging and left off the alternatives. You know the part of science that makes it science.

Oh Btw, I get your actual reasoning for posting and agree with that too. Wonder how many other states are in a similar situation and it doesn’t get reported?

I'd be curious for the resident Doctor to weigh in on this. Has the efficiency of MABs not been known inside of the medical field? I would be very surprised if that was true. My SO works in healthcare and has been very familiar with them for a while.

To that extent, if the people that actually prescribe and fill the treatment are familiar with their existence and efficiency, is it that big of an issue is the regular public isn't as familiar? It isn't like I can wander down to CVS and pick some up over the counter? Seems like the right messaging to the public at large is to encourage them to take the free and widely available preventative option (vaccine) to avoid having to need to use the more expensive and scarce resource (MAB).

If the medical community wasn't properly informed of the effectiveness, then I agree with you. If they were, then I am not sure it is that much of a failure. Throughout this entire episode I always find it weird whenever it hits the point like regular joes (like me) have formed an opinion on a specific medical treatment or drug (hasn't stopped me from doing it, because I am overconfident dumbass).

Did you happen to read the article? As it states, there was a slow uptick in utilization not awareness. Gotta think if administration took the time to message properly, this could have speed up its uptake. Sorry I did use knowledge and should have used my words better in my last comment so I wanted to clarify. Heck we have had them almost as long as the vaccines.

And yes Fauci did finally mentioned them around August 24th which got wide spread coverage. How many times did Biden mention them? Just as an option? There will always be some who are aggressive with new medications, some who let others go first, and those who will continue to practice like they always have. Unfortunately, those who treat aggressively and stay up on current treatments sometimes assume others do as well but that is simply is not true. Some physicians like guidelines some do not.

My wife’s good friend didn’t feel comfortable getting vaxed because of a pre-existing condition and her physician agreed. So yes in a perfect world vax then cold medicine is great way to go but not everyone can use that treatment plan. Unfortunately when she did get Covid about 5 months ago she had to ask her doctor for mAbs treatment. Not saying her doctor didn’t anything about them, but why was she one who had to ask?

Finally, yes mAbs are a scarce resource now, but it wasn’t always way. Yes expensive but free regardless of vaccination status.

My daughter got notices from three classes today that there were kids who tested positive in the class. I think she only goes to three classes a day.

I know it's not a good thing for some of you who post here, and I'm sorry that's the case, but for a large portion of the country we've truly reached the "Aww, fuck it!" phase of the pandemic.

I'm immune deficient and I'm about as close as I can be to that phase myself. Met my brother and his friend at a local dive bar last night for some Golden Tee and a couple drinks. It was not crowded at all but that is something I would have absolutely not considered doing 6-12 months ago. Heck I have been to several X games this year, and last year turned down free tickets when they were only allowing 200 fans bc I thought that was too risky for me.

Plus I got the monoclonal antibody infusion a few weeks ago, so for the next couple months I think I will be at my safest point I have been during these last 2 years. Gotta live it up!

The Atlantic had an article about this phenomenon today: the writer calls it "Vaxxed and Done". Now, here in Wichita people have too often skipped the "vaxxed" part of that forumlation.

Yes, indeed! I know very few people who have NOT had it recently, including my SIL who has stage 4 cancer and is on all kinds of experimental drugs. Sick for a few days, then bounce right back. I know that’s not the case with everybody, and I hate that, but universal among those I know. Even my 94 year old mother’s friends come back from it these days.

I’ll wear a mask when it makes sense, but I’m just living my life.

One of the most disturbing things I've seen lately are recent TV ads running about getting children vaccinated. Soft fuzzy music, and "you'll be ok". Reality is, that it's about nothing more than the 20 bucks they get for administering a dose.

This would describe myself and most of my social circle. I got the vax, and my kids are all vaccinated, and I'm going to trust that between that and being somewhat young and relatively healthy that I will fare OK when (not if) I get COVID. It seems inevitable at this point, and I'm going to live my life.

I am really enjoying working from home and (especially) not having to travel for work though. That shit sucked. So COVID hasn't been all bad for me.
