A mask study cannot be conducted in a lab. The limitations are the same as all studies conducted in my field, and part of the process is recognizing the degree that the limitations impact the results and make conclusions accordingly. The Danish mask study is about as good as can be done in the real world, and the results are compelling.
I've said this before - look at the real world case data. Adding mask mandates/lifting mask mandates do not change the case trajectory. Similar geographies with mandates look very similar to those without mask mandates. Yes, that is strictly observational, but the degree to which the observation repeats itself is also compelling.
