Ok so what is your response to the healthcare and manufacturing industries that are having just as hard a time hiring employees even though they both pay way above minimum wage and full benefits? It’s because the government is paying for healthcare and unemployment. Once that ends, restaurant industry workers will be back. The government’s response to covid has been effed up since the beginning.
Workers shouldn't have to rely on tips to make a livable wage. So if it's a slow night they just get stuck making a couple bucks an hour? And you wonder why no one wants to do those jobs.
The entire rest of the world operates one way but we use the dumb tipping model so owners can get away with paying their employees a garbage hourly rate. I don't feel bad that multi million dollar corporation Frisch's can't find workers. Either pay better or close up shop. Good local restaurants manage to do it, chains sure as hell could if they actually cared about their employees.
Do they pay good wages? Manufacturing sure isn't known for that. Paying just the minimum wage or slightly above it is in no way good pay either. The current minimum wage is extremely outdated and has been needing a major adjustment for decades. It has never and will continue to not keep up with inflation if only minimum adjustments are made every 5-10 years.
It's pretty simple supply and demand to me. If you can't find enough workers, then it's on you to offer better pay and benefits to entice someone to work for you. The current unemployment rate nationally is only 6%. It's not a year ago when it was 15%. There are plenty of people out there working or looking for jobs.
The majority of the first world offers universal healthcare and yet they manage to have plenty of people working in restaurants and factories and healthcare. It's long time our country steps up and pays people an actual living wage. If you don't want to do it, then people aren't going to want to work for you. That's a problem each company needs to deal with on their own. It's not the governments fault that they're too cheap or too obsessed with keeping profits as high as possible to pay reasonable salaries.
This is largely true, in my experience. I used to work at a mediocre Mexican restaurant while I was in College and I would easily clear $100 in tips on a good night, for about 6 hours work. Had I actually worked at a decent restaurant I'm sure I could have made a lot more.
It’s governments fault for giving out handouts that weren’t needed outside of the first stimulus. Mfg and health pay well, you just have to ya know work. Finding workers was not an issue before covid, it is now. You can preach all of the other paragraphs you wrote but what it comes down to is that the government has enacted certain handouts that weren’t needed. Wasteful government spending..shocking.
And that is where you may go wrong. There is another option in this case, which is to sit home and make more money without doing any work whatsoever. We have very effectively removed the motivation to work. Somebody somewhere brought up hiring for a distribution center. They offered $16/hour to start, but studies found that people could earn $26.10/hour by sitting at home collecting unemployment and stimulus checks. (Don’t hold me to the exact numbers, but I think that is pretty close - I couldn’t find the post which is probably in the politics thread.)
We are handing out TRILLIONS of dollars with no regard to who actually needs it. This will not be without consequences. Why go to work if you can sit at home and make more money? My son and his wife got their checks despite him being in a new job making more money than ever! That is a very real problem.
Yep! I worked for freaking lone star steakhouse not exactly Jeff Ruby’s and cleared 150-200 a night on the weekends for about 4-5 hours of work. Yeah the job sucks because in general the public sucks, and keeping from fighting with short order cooks was no easy task. However, can easily clear 40k at a restaurant of that caliber which in cincy is just fine for one person
When I met my wife she had a couple housemates who worked in food and beverage (a bartender and a server) who made more than double what she earned working at a bank. My wife sucked it up because she knew they had a ceiling on their earnings, and it has paid off. But there is no doubt you can make a very reasonable living with much of it coming by way of tips.
