Pre-print study shows almost no COVID transmission among high school athletes while playing their sport:

"We found that case rates of reported COVID-19 in high school athletes were significantly related to the case rates of their respective county’s general population... 96% of the cases among athletes had a reported source of infection from household and community contacts, and only 1 (0.5%) from a known sport contact."

And for you Masketeer Musketeers:
"Reported face mask use among the sports with the largest number of respondent schools (football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, and cross country) did not have a significant relationship with COVID-19 incidence."

Now do winter indoor sports instead of fall outdoor sports. The amount of basketball covid o personally saw was way higher than those numbers. Pretty sure we have had this discussion a few months ago. Maybe late November?

How many of those were seriously ill?

How many died?

Answers: didn't hear of any that were serious / zero

I sure am glad I didn’t get so wrapped up in this crap that I feel obsessed. I won’t give you a dozen links a day to prove a point. I just kind of played along, go by some simple rules and let it pass. I wasn’t going to let something like this get me too worked up, one way or the other. Like politics, some people feel the need to be extreme. They will never convince anyone else because they are hard to take seriously due to their obsession.

The people more towards the middle seem to be the more reasonable folks.

I was pretty oh well just wear the mask and deal with the lockdowns until the double mask and no normal regardless of the vaccine comments. It’s time to start opening up.

It feels as open as ever here in Atlanta, other than a mask in the grocery store or walking into a restaurant or retail store. It’s become natural, and I know it will pass in time. No big deal, at least for me.

I try not to let any comments bother me as much as my reality, which is pretty normal.

Of the children that got it there were no serious cases. It did however create a domino effect of cases that resulted in a few hospitalizations. Not sure if anyone died but certainly possible. Youth basketball was a huge driver locally here. Some of that is because of the travel leagues, car pooling, and social gatherings/sleepovers before and after. Other sports had little to no effect.

My son's Covid came indirectly through a basketball tournament. At least we're pretty sure of it since you can't exactly be certain of these things. He had a buddy from school who played in a basketball tournament that I know (from a number of people) ended up with some cases spread. Neither of them are particularly "adept" at mask wearing, and I'm pretty sure that buddy gave it to my son. Who somehow did NOT give it to any of us. We all got it 3 weeks later as a result of some pickleball action. OK, it was probably the beers we had with people at the table AFTER pickleball.

All to say, our 5 person family's 5 cases were 100% related to indoor winter sports. I still wouldn't do anything different in retrospect (other than not have those particular beers that particular day).

The study did not include basketball.
