I think at this point it is doing a disservice to everyone. I think it pushes the blue state/red state narrative which causes each party to all but abandon certain states and only leads to more partisan outcomes.

Maybe a Republican will never win in California, but there are a shit load of Republican votes there that they could be investing money in to get, and it wouldn't be throwing that money away as they would count in the overall vote count. Same goes with Democrats throughout the South. Instead it seems like both parties are only catering to 5 states and the rest of the country simply does not matter.

Yes, but if you get rid of it, only two or three states are going to matter unless we find another way to elect a president.

I'd be in for listening to other solutions, but someone is going to have to come up with something better first, and better than the reasoning of "I want to get rid of it, because it doesn't benefit me" which is what the left has been doing.

Does anyone really think the Left would be talking about doing away with the Electoral College if they had lost the popular election, but won the electoral votes? Of course not. They’d be praising the wisdom of the founding fathers. The Right would then be screaming to replace the Electoral College.

Why would it be 2 or 3 states? If the national vote came down to the winner by 5,000 votes, every vote in every state would count.

Why do you think only 2 or 3 states would matter?

Only 2/3rds of eligible voters cast a ballot. I wonder how many of those were located in safe states where they didn't think their vote mattered? This seems like it would greatly open up the voting pool throughout the entire country.

I also agree with Go, that if you are going to change it, it needs to be 2 or 3 cycles out so that everyone can adjust their ground game well ahead of any change.

Because of where the most population in the country is. Where do you think most of the time would be spent by politicians? I also don't believe that the issues where I live, are the same as those in California, New York and Texas.

You really think that politicians would spread their time out any better if it were a national vote?

I do not advocate for a few urban population centers to hold such power. Most of our urban communities in this country is evidence enough for this to not be a good idea.

I'd be pretty pleased to never see a politician eat a fried twinkee at the Iowa State Fair ever again.

This! And no one really knows for sure who would win the popular vote as so many don't vote as they say "their vote doesn't matter"
