Xeus likes a place downtown called "The ManHole".

I am torn between Larosas, Trottas and Skyline.
If you're talking burgers you need to eliminate Zip's from the conversation as Arthur's and DEFINITELY Gordo's (right by Xavier) are far superior. Also in terms of greatest Cincinnati restaurant, Bella Luna should be in the discussion too. Xavier people AND the best dessert in Cincinnati, bread pudding.
Any thoughts on Quatman Cafe? Never eaten there, but I've heard great things.
I have never heard of furniture being snobby before. Their stuff is modern which my wife tends to like.
Back on subject, Quatman's is a great burger joint. No frills - just a great burger. Zips is my favorite though. I haven't tried Terry's yet but will soon. Arthur's is overrated.
Speaking of Sunday breakfast/brunches, there is a small place in Bellevue, KY that has great breakfast sautees (not sure I spelled that right) called the Bellevue Bistro. I been there a few times and have always came away satisfied.
My favorite restaurant remains the Precinct. Steak Munoz. Hmmmm.
There is nothing wrong with either of those places either.
It always surprises me that anyone thinks they have a difinitive say over what other people prefer. I agree with you that Arthurs and Gordo's both serve up excellent burgers, but superior? Not sure how you can make that statement. If you like toppings on your burgers, then you will probably prefer Arthurs, Gordos or Terry's to Zips. If you like being treated like a customer instead of cattle, Terry's might not be your place. If you want to catch the Reds game at the bar with some good beer and a good burger that stands on the quality of the meat instead of gourmet toppings, you may prefer Zips.
And if you've never experienced Quatman's, I recommend it highly. Quatmans features HUGE burgers made from good quality fresh beef. You want toppings? Tough. You get onion. Maybe there are pickles, too, but nothing else. The daily special is a sandwich or burger, chips and a drink. That drink can be a Hudy Delight if you so desire. Keep track of what you have, because they don't. When you leave, you tell them what you had. Quatmans is a neighborhood bar/burger joint that has refused to change, and it's worth going for the experience.
Has anyone tried Hugo in Oakley?
Have to go with the Precinct, even though I can't stand Jeff Ruby. However, if Scalea's was still open (also owned by a Xavier grad) I would have chosen it. Pitrelli's in Mason is also very good.
And Zip's and Quatman's need to be in any conversation about the best burger joints in town.
Quatman's on game night is something to behold. Definitely not the time and place for a leisurely meal. It was so hectic I can't convince hubby to give it a 2nd try. The burgers were fine but not memorable. I'm not a big toppings so that didn't turn me off.
Gordo's on Montgomery Rd South of Surrey Square has good burgers, a full bar, and a decent menu. I'm not sure it'd rate on anyone's best list but it's solid and I'm looking forward to it as a pre-game option this season. It's not my thing but it might interest some others to know the serving girls usually wear short shorts and tight tops, and look pretty young. Only once has that meant bad service.
I'm so not offended.
If you have a tough time getting into Zip's (it can get pretty busy), the Main Street Cafe in Newtown provides the same burger and an expanded menu. I even think it's a buck or two cheaper per burger out in the boonies of Newtown than Mt. Lookout.
"How about that City Barbeque"- Byron Larkin.
May I express my sincere apologies. I never meant for my assumption to be an aspersion upon any one person in particular, or posters to this thread in general. And I sincerely apologize for any inadvertant high-jacking of the topic. I simply meant to highlight the amenities of a local bar/restaurant that is a new discovery to me. It's rare that I find a place that serves both loaded french fries and herb-encrusted salmon and does both equally well. What's more, I can get a cocktail for a reasonable price.
In answer to your question, we've only been there a few times, and mostly on Fridays, but they've been similarly dressed each time. I don't know how much the change in weather will affect their dress.
:p
Is the H&H Cafe still in Norwood? The have great breakfast.
I personally think Jeff Ruby's downtown is the best of the Ruby restaurants. Another can't miss steakhouse that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is Morton's. And if you want great Italian food, reasonably priced, and arguably one of the best views in town, you have to try Primavista.
If I'm on an expense account, Ruby's downtown and Morton's are on the list. For an overall awesome meal at a not ungodly price, Precinct is the winner in my book.
It's not difficult to drop $300 for 2 people at Mortons, though they do have a $99-for-two meal special that makes it possible to get out of there with a bottle of wine and tax and tip under $200.
Used to work at Mortons in college. The food is spectacular. I prefer their steak over Ruby's anyday. The best thing about working at Mortons was the employee meal before every shift. It is pricy but delicious and the service is spectacular. Most of the servers down there are doing it for their career.
Shame, many a morning there after closing the bar (working) cheese omelet and toast, then off to class at X! The food was great, but always remembered not to look to close, had the feeling of being a filthy place, bet that pile of dirt was moving on it's own.
I love it, but I would never try to convince anyone about the allure of Quatman's. You get it or you don't.
A) I would never expect you to have any meaningful contribution to a discussion on fine dining, unless it were limited to "best deal" or "cheap eats". Remember, you're the guy who won't even eat at Quatman's unless the cheeseburger is the special that day.
B) I find it interesting that you amended your post from:
- "Xeus likes a place downtown called "The ManHole". I think I'll pass."
to simply
+ "Xeus likes a place downtown called "The ManHole"."
Makes me think you might not pass on The Manhole. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Dare I say I am firmly in the Quatman's camp. I'll take a trip to Quatman's over a trip to Zip's anyday.
Yes, you do have to just get the old school feel of Quatman's. Try the Turtle Soup as well. (My usual order consists of the cheeseburger, fries, Turtle Soup and a Coors Light or two).
Just be careful - that can of soft drink is the same price as this straight out of the wooden icebox (no joke) mug of draft beer. For awhile I was going there more regularly and felt like Norm walking into Cheers.
I hear they weregoing to open a store in the Mason area, except it would have full bar service instead of just beer like the Norwood store. For some reason I think that would go against the whole feel of the place.
How did we get from Cincinnati Fine Dining to best bar burgers? Speaking of, they tell me I have to try the Oakley Pub, any reviews on that one?
I've been to all of the Ruby's restaurants and Carlo and Johnny's is my favorite. However, they are all excellent.

Aren't you right around the corner from the Oakley Pub? I've been there a few times. The burgers are good. The other pub fare I've had there is standard - nothing to get excited about. The beer list is good. In short, it's a good corner bar with a good burger. I wouldn't make a trip to get there, but if you can walk there, you should definitely check it out.
I went to Zip's once and had terrible service. I will NEVER return. Quatman's froze its prices (and interior)in 1982 so it is incredibly cheap and not a bad burger either.
I had a pretty darn good burger at The Wildflower Cafe in Mason a couple of months ago. Actually, all of their food was pretty solid. For anyone living in the suburbs, its worth a trip.

For a strong fast food burger in Mason, I always like to drive thru Culvers. Delicious butter burgers.
For Skyline - I still contend the one at the corner of Clifton and Ludlow is the best, especially at lunch. We have a theory that their volume is so high, the chilli just doesn't have time to cool between kitchen and your table.
Of course lately, when getting chili for lunch, it's Camp Washington Chili - that stuff is where it is at.
