I think this whole post is pretty much right on, but I'm highlighting this part in particular. Anger and fear drive much more engagement than any political issues, other than maybe taxes. I think that the results of the 2020 election juxtaposed against the elections yesterday shows that nicely. Trump was a phenomenal anger and fear machine for the Democrats in the 2020 elections. They still underperformed in the House, but it got them the Presidency and the Senate. Without Trump they have nothing to rile people up about.
Republicans are plenty riled up though. Look at the whole CRT thing: Republicans are ripshit pissed about it, but I haven't seen much evidence that it's been taught below a College level. Still, it's become a rallying cry for many, when I tend to think it should barely rank on the stage of issues facing our country right now.
I think that one thing the VA and NY gubernatorial races highlighted that I hope Republicans take heed of, is that Trump winning the nomination again in 2024 is probably the worst thing that could happen to them. He still might beat Biden, but right now Trump seems like about the only person Biden could beat. The caveat to that (of course) is that it's early in Biden's term, but after they almost certainly lose the House and Senate next year it's hard to see things getting better for Ol' Joe from here. Still - Trump rearing his head in 2024 is going to re-instill a sense of purpose in a lot of currently listless Democrats, especially many of the moderate ones that broke for Youngkin in Virginia.
