Covid-19

A coworker of mine (age 50s, some congenital vascular issues) received the vaccine 4 weeks ago and was set to receive the 2nd dose this week. Unfortunately she caught covid and was hospitalized over the weekend, discharged today and recovering. It feels like such a relief to have been vaccinated but at the same time immunity is not instantaneous.

Got my second shot last week and felt kind of hungover the next day (a feeling to which I have great familiarity) but then normal the 2nd day. Seems pretty typical. If I could go back in time I would take the day after off to rest.

I just got my Moderna jab #1 an hour ago. Feels great. I am interested in what you say about your coworker, because I was told literally this morning that no one has gotten sick enough to be hospitalized once they have their first shot.

I've heard that the first shot gives you 60% immunity. I got my first shot this past weekend. Arm was a bit sore for a couple days, but that's it.

She was definitely very ill and received the typical hospital course of treatment for covid. I believe if she did not have the risk factors for complications she would have been outpatient treatment. I have not heard of anyone else being hospitalized post-vaccine either which is why I thought I’d share. The hospitalist also has not, but it is pretty early in vaccination rollout to the general population. Something to keep an eye on for sure, especially if we are seeing a wave of new strains that may not be equally susceptible to the antibodies created by the vaccine.

Great to hear she’s feeling better or better to be discharged. On a positive note, the vaccine may have made the situation better than not having it.

I only saw some news report of a nurse that died like a few days after the first shot I believe? I think efficacy isn't gained until 12 days after the first shot either from what I remember from Pfizer's safety profile. So far I haven't seen any hospitalizations post-vaccine either here, but you are correct about the new strains coming through, will be interesting to see the statistics on it when they come out with them. Happy to hear she's discharged and recovering well!

Exactly! This is why I am so vocal about this. The Covid narrative coming from health officials, the Democrats and the media doesn't equal reality. We the people must seize our God-given freedoms, rights and power back before its too late. There are many signs of defiance and rebellion popping up around the world - we need more!

Where do you live? The reality is most states are open with limited restrictions. Southern and many other states are wide open, you are free to live your life.

It’s almost hard to tell the difference between now and 18 months ago where I live and in Florida where we recently returned from. A few closed tables at restaurants, people considerate enough to wear masks in close quarters. Common sense. The people at either extreme on the spectrum want to wind things up. The common ground closer to the middle seems to be the common sense territory. I have no reason to get wound up about this other than pointing out that extremism is usually unfounded, at best. Kooky at worst.

Happy days are near again!

My wife and I both get our first dose of the Pfizer vaccine next week. To say we are looking forward to it is an understatement.

We got the first shot a week ago but had to drive 90+ minutes each way. The second shot will be at a location about 30 minutes away in a couple weeks. Vary happy to save on that drive, even happier with the prospect of having it behind us.......... for now.

It seems to be pretty efficient so far in NJ. We actually had appointments in April that we booked a long time ago, however this week we got emails with a link from the NJ Health Department to schedule for next week at a vaccine megasite 20 min from my house. Seems pretty easy so far.

EXTREMELY efficient for us. I guess it was National Guard and VERY well organized. They were really moving people through there. First time was a County fairground, next time is at the Delta Museum down by the airport. HUGE parking lot (and actually kind of a cool museum). I’m glad we got to change to a closer location.

My wife signed up on line after reading my 93 year old mother was allowed to get 2 caregivers access to shots. I do her shopping, get her to the doctor, pharmacy, etc. Nobody ever even asked who we were even caring for, much less need any kind of documentation. Whatever, get those shots out! And take care of the teachers!

Happy anniversary... what a difference a year can make.

I’ve been waiting for the CDC to give more motivation for people to be vaccinated, as there is still a large percentage of the population that is declining. Yesterday these guidelines were released for those fully vaccinated.

If fully vaccinated it is considered safe to:
*Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or staying 6 feet apart.

*Visit with unvaccinated people from one other household indoors without wearing masks or staying 6 feet apart if everyone in the other household is at low risk for severe disease.

*Refrain from quarantine and testing if they do not have symptoms of COVID-19 after contact with someone who has COVID-19.


The case graphs are trending downward so there is some light at the end of the tunnel as more vaccine gets rolled out. In Ohio the amount of vaccine sitting in the fridge or freezer remains quite high. Hopefully that changes soon.

My wife hot her shot yesterday at a local college. She said it was also administered by the National Guard and was an extremely organized and efficient operation. Lots of people we know starting to get vax appointments in the next few weeks. It really feels like the pace is really picking up. My parents and in-laws have all been vaccinated as well (all in Ohio).

EDIT: Also glad to see the updated CDC guidelines. They needed that to motivate people to get the vax. I'm happy (well, maybe not happy) to continue masking in public after I get vaccinated, but I had no intention of masking when getting together with friends and family.

I am really worried about them not clarifying what "fully vaccinated means" in these articles. I think you are going to get a lot of people that get their shot and immediately run out to see their grandkids rather than waiting the two week period after the shot (or longer for the 1 shot J&J).

People shouldn't have been avoiding their grandkids in the first place IMO. I think they'll be fine (particularly with the steeply declining case numbers already and if they take "fully vaccinated" to mean having had the second shot, because the first shot will be providing quite a bit of protection).

I actually think they got the vaccination order backwards. Start with the people that are going to be out in the world to get the economy moving first. Then move to the elderly who for the most part aren't going out into the world. But when most of the people making the decisions are elderly, well they are going to take care of themselves first.

Completely disagree. Get the most vulnerable vaccinated first. Then everyone else can go back out into the world as normal even before they get vaccinated, because who really cares if young, healthy people get Covid as long as they're not likely to pass it on to someone who it might kill.
