I thought the whole UMass debacle had soured the coaching world on Kelsey. Have heard a lot about him not being well liked.

Curious to know what you have heard about not being well liked? How does that translate into not being a good head coach?
The guy turns down a job b/c he has second thoughts about it and he gets a black eye? NO ONE knows what happened there and what was promised, offered, communicated etc.
I mean, of course he gets a black eye for that. It's not crippling. Altman overcame it when he did it to Arkansas. Gregg Marshall overcame it when he did it to College of Charleston. Billy Donovan overcame it when he did it to Atlanta.
But combine it with the weird departure from Xavier and some of the rumors of how the NKU coaching search went down, and it's a bit of a troubling pattern.
By all accounts the NKU gig didn't happen b/c they couldn't iron out details of the contract. That happens all the time......
Look, I'm not dead set on Kelsey (if we have an opening soon) and think there will be plenty of good options for Xavier to consider. He should just be one of them IMHO
To flip that around, why are we still talking about him? Because he coached here for 3 years a decade ago? Do we pick other departed assistants to make them into some sort of savior for the program?
I don't think anything he has done is a disqualifier, but there is some weird stuff with UMass and NKU as Go mentioned. I certainly don't think he has done anything to warrant the amount of chatter he gets from the Xavier fan base though. He spent 3 years at Xavier before leaving to coach Winthrop. He has coached Winthrop for almost 10 years now and has made the NCAA 2x? 3 if you assume they would have made it last year. If we hired someone with his resume who's name wasn't Pat Kelsey would you be impressed? I'll bet there are tons of guys in the SWAC and Mountain West with similar resumes. Why aren't we all talking about them?
If we get rid of Steele I'd like to see a thorough national search. Not settling for targeting some guy because he is from Cincinnati and coached at Xavier for a hot minute.
We don't have to assume they'd have made it last year. They won the Big South Tournament last year. Personally, I think this year is the one that finally puts Kelsey's resume in a place where he should be considered for jobs like Xavier. And he didn't JUST coach at Xavier for three years. He also took a business management class at Xavier with GoMuskies. That's GOT to count for something.
