Agreed. I still think he should test the waters considering the new rules. Teams have drafted injured players before.

Teams who have had Ed on their radar could look at this as getting value later in the draft. Instead of letting him go back to school and hoping he falls to them next year, they can give him a promise to a guaranteed cheap rookie deal, let him rehab, and send him to the D-League.

Seems like it would be better to stay at Xavier and work toward his degree if his basketball career might be in doubt. If he turns pro and the knee doesn't hold up he would be stuck without a basketball career or a degree.

I don't think his basketball career is in doubt. I mean the guy worked through tendinitis related to a significant growth spurt, suffered a concussion, and this season tore ligaments in his shoulder and knee. Definitely a lot of injuries, but I don't think any are degenerative or suggest that he won't be able to make it back. I know the NBA can get spooked by foot and back injuries more than knees/shoulders, etc., so Ed has avoided that fate to an extent.

He could always come back and get his degree or do it part time in the offseason, etc. Especially since he would theoretically only be a semester or two short after this school year.

Yes, I know Freshmen rarely start out of the gate but Scruggs is gonna be solid and there wouldn't be experienced options anyway. I'd be really excited though about that starting 5 with those talented guys and with Gooden and Tyrique Jones having the valuable experience of the rest of this year then under their belt.

Ernst doesn't have to sit out a year, correct? If so, then I'd really rather they red shirt Jones next season. They would essentially have 3 bigs without him and there's no point to waste a year the same way they did with Farr

At this point, I would be surprised to see a team grab him in the first round. It would be pretty high risk for Ed to go on a promise he would get drafted in the 2nd and then given a contract. I can see a team promising that, following through with it on the other hand is another question. (I remember seeing rumors D. Brown was promised by a couple teams he would get taken late in first round if still available).

Having said that, I feel like he will likely try that route anyways.

There have definitely been rumblings. He transferred from his high school in Macon to Putnam Science Academy between the first and second semesters. This move was purely made in an effort to elevate his academic standing. I know the staff at X is has the feeling that he "has work to do" when it comes to qualifying next year, whatever that may mean. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't qualify but there are definitely concerns.

My understanding is Ernst is eligible to play in 2017-2018 and will have 3 years.

So (at the moment), the 13 scholarship players for 2017-2018 are as follows:

13. Brady Ernst (JUCO Transfer, committed Jan 2017, 3 years of eligibility left)

I think even if he were eligible he would be redshirted. I also think that right now, if he is ruled eligible we should see it as a nice bonus, not something we should be counting on.

If he is projected to be a first round pick,I think he would have to consider leaving.Why take the risk of further injury and lose out on a few million
$.This injury certainly isn't going to help his stock though.
