Enquirer - Doc "Has XU Outgrown A-10"

If 3-5 teams between DAY, TEM, STL, UMASS, URI, CHA and GW could get more consistent, I'd say no. In it's current 3 year state, it's an absolute yes.

Has XU outgrown the A-10?

Kind of stupid article. He closes with this question:

Quote:
But when conference game after conference game is like the Little Big Horn, when do the Indians on (Easy) Victory Parkway start considering an upgrade in enemies?
Which he answered in the previous paragraph:

Quote:
It’s all hypothetical, because right now the Musketeers have nowhere to go. The ACC isn’t taking applications. The last time the Big East re-shuffled, Xavier was not considered seriously because the rest of its sports weren’t in the same class as its men’s and women’s basketball teams.

I think the Enquirer has outgrown Paul Daugherty. Reality is when something better comes along it will be considered. You know the A10 used to bother me but then I thought about Gonzaga and Memphis. The NCAA's and a packed house to see your team play is all that really matters. Grow where your planted.

all I have to say is knobber (sorry, inside joke).

I do envy one thing about the Gonzaga program: they can't obsess about conference affiliation. And that's a healthy thing!!! There are other things we should be concerned about (like facilities, out of conference schedule, recruiting, etc..) Conferences in College Basketball are growing less and less relevant. They are no longer the magic bullet that they used to be to raise a program to the next level.

It's not XU outgrowing the A-10 so much as the A-10 simply underachieving. Sure, we've been the class of the conference recently, but we're not exactly killing it. It's not like Xavier isn't being challenged.

Around the time we joined the A-10 and a couple of years after, there were some pretty solid teams like Temple, UMass and Rhode Island...hell, even St. Bonaventure was up there. Now, we've hit a solid dry spell where it appears some of these programs aren't even trying.

But this article is just meant to set X up. Now we're going to go lose at St. Bonaventure and Doc is going to get a ton of hits to his article.

I agree. I don't think Memphis has outgrown CUSA. They were in the title game last year. They are fine and Coach Cal is happy to be where he is. We can make the Final Four from the Atlantic 10 Conference. We are fine.

The A-10 in general is in a down cycle and it hasn't hurt us at all. This league will turn around at least a bit in the coming years. That shouldn't hurt us either.
