Rush The Court is back with another edition of One on One: an Interview Series, which we hope to publish weekly on Friday mornings throughout the year. If you have any specific interview requests or want us to interview you, shoot us an email at rushthecourt@yahoo.com.

Arthur Agee is one of the inimitable names in basketball circles for his excruciatingly real portrayal of a hotshot recruit with dreams of the NBA in one of the greatest documentaries of all-time, Hoop Dreams. The movie tracked Agee and his Chicago compatriot, William Gates, as they moved through the shady underworld of high school basketball star-making and college basketball recruiting in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Agee, the player who seemed more likely to end up on the wrong path as a result of his tough home life, ended up winning the Chicago Public League championship in 1991 and attending Arkansas State on scholarship. While he nor Gates never made it to the NBA, they both have found meaning through their experiences captured on film to pass on their lessons to youngsters in the community: Gates as a pastor, and Agee as a motivational speaker who travels around the country inspiring students to follow their “hoop dreams” in all walks of life. Agee was kind enough to speak with us last week.
HSAC Analyses:
Time Out Before Last Possession Benefits Defense

Those folks from the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective have been at it again, continuing what will apparently be a series of analyses of close basketball games. They’ve released two more sets of data, one that says the defense benefits from a time out being called before a team that trails by two points or less takes its last possession, and another that verifies this defensive advantage in situations where the score is tied. The benefit comes from the fact that a foul on the leading/defending team is less likely to be called because a coach has time to communicate with his players and set his defense. This is important because their data from last season also shows that offenses which draw fouls on the defense in these situations score almost twice as much (1.62 points per last possession) on the average than offenses that do not draw fouls (0.878 points).

ESPN - BYU to leave the Mountain West beginning with the 2011-12 season

The expected - BYU will officially become a football independent next season. The deadline was tomorrow for the Cougars to state their intentions, and this season will be their last in the Mountain West. The conference will now officially say adieu to Utah and BYU and say hello to Nevada and Fresno State.

The unexpected - BYU will not join the WAC as anticipated for their other sports, but will instead join the West Coast Conference. That's a big addition for that conference - now you've got Gonzaga, St. Mary's, and now BYU at the top of the conference. It appears likely that the WAC will have to add some I-A and I-AA schools to retain their automatic bid as far as the NCAA basketball tournament goes. As for football, now we'll have to see if they remain I-A or go down to I-AA. The WAC is going to pursue a $5 million exit fee from both Nevada and Fresno State.

Harvard Study:
No Discernible Advantage to Fouling While Up Three

One of the coolest sporting trends of the last decade in sports has been the increasing usage of statistical analysis to make determinations about the games that we love and follow. While Bill James, Nate Silver and others have done yeoman’s work in popularizing the use of these metrics, they’ve mostly focused on the professional side of sports (and political polling, in Silver’s case). One notable exception, Ken Pomeroy’s site of college basketball tempo-free statistics, has been invaluable in how we all understand and evaluate the game, helping to debunk common myths while also alerting us to teams and players under the radar of the national consciousness. Another up-and-coming group that is showing it wants to enter the fray by analyzing some of the big questions in the game is the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective, who just two weeks ago presented us with the most unlikely finish of the 2009-10 season, a random game between Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge.

The SEC has (sorta) banned Cowbells during in-game action. Full link to photo of the Bull Bell, and excerpt, below.

Question: are there any controls on noisemakers at the Cintas?

http://http://www.al.com/sports/inde..._for_miss.html

"We now know what ringing cowbells in Starkville at the wrong time will cost Mississippi State. According to The Jackson Clarion-Ledger, the SEC has decided the first offense will cost the school $5,000, the second offense is a $25,000 penalty, and the third offense is worth $50,000.

Cowbells can be used before a game, at halftime, during timeouts and after scores. Using the cowbell during the game action -- which Mississippi State fans have done for years as a school symbol -- would constitute a penalty.

The fines will be per game in which a violation or violations occur, not per violation. The SEC has capped the fine structure at $50,000, and the first-offense fine will be reduced to $5,000 if Mississippi State goes three years without a violation.

Some major questions still remain on this one-year trial experiment. Mainly, how will the SEC determine if a violation has occurred? Mississippi State AD Scott Stricklin told The Clarion-Ledger he expects the SEC representative assigned to each game and feedback from opposing schools will determine if there was a cowbell violation.

So how much is too much cowbell? I see a Christopher Walken SNL skit coming out of this."
