Unless the snow depth is more than John Holmes' length, we don't even pay attention.

This town astounds me with how it completely overreacts to somewhat mild amounts of snowfall.

I fully blame the weathermen for making it worse than it really is. Oh and I found out this little tidbit, this guy

I had to go to school in 14 inches of snow back in high school...and for schools to already announce delays or closings for 3 inches (possibly...they have predicted 12 of snow so far for the month of January with only a dusting). St. X had a delayed start today? Really?!?! Man up Cincinnati.

I'll be at Cintas on Wedneday! Without a doubt! 3-5 inches? Come on!

People freak out here in the Louisville area even worse than in Cincy. I once had a day off from school because of a FORECAST of snow. And guess what? It started snowing the at the time we would have gotten out of school. It really is sad I have to say....

Stopped clocks are right more often than the area weathermen.

I theorize that it is a symptom of an overly litigious society. They're afraid of the time that they don't predict snow and a foot gets dropped on us, causing some mental giant to sue because they got in a wreck.

I grew up in Chicago and we hardly ever got snow days, it had to snow over a foot to get a snow day...in fact my senior year in HS we were the only school that did not close, we had 8 inches on the ground and the temps were below zero and Fr. would not close school. We seniors had a sit in at lunch time at his office, the Dean came out and said if we wanted to graduate in June we better not let him see us out here when he comes out of his office...

With that said I hope we have a level 3 on Wednesday that expires early afternoon so we can all go to the Cintas for a great game....

My kids went to camp there over the summer. I scoped it out for the same reason. It looks like you could go straight into the woods though with a good run. I don't want my kids bashing up against trees. French park has a and open landing area and thats why I like the looks of that. When going down Stansbury do you get close to the trees? That is a great hill but it looks like you would go right into them.

Snipe, we used to go to Kenwood Country club's huge hill on Euclid avenue. PArt of it got chopped for 71, but I think it's still pretty decent.
There are some wicked hills on the old Crest Hills country club grounds near East Galbraith and Ridge. May be fenced in by now, but it's safe and you don't risk reunning into roads. But it's a long walk back up. Also, you could try sneaking in Beckett Ridge CC and go directly to the second Tee. then go up the hill opposite the Tee box and sled back down. Be sure to ring the bell before you come down. My dad said when they were kids back in the teens, they'd go sledding down Straight St. and /or Ravine St. Cars couldn't navigate either and the cops would block off the cross streets and put haybails at the bottom so kids wouldn't crash into traffic on Central Parkway and McMicken.:D

Now you're bringing back some memories. I grew up right across the street from KCC and we used to pull our sleds over to those rolling hills and icy ponds every chance we got. The course (Kenview) has been redesigned, but most of the hills are there. We named one of the tracks "Sh!t Hill" because of a natural mogul at the bottom called "Sh!t Bump." We did not know Sh!t Bump existed until it the first time down the hill. Its name was earned by what we yelled when we hit that ramp the first time.

We've had a relentless winter in Michigan with snowfall amounts far greater than normal and temperatures that have dipped to -20. Our district has canceled school twice - once for snow/ice and the other time for the bitter cold. The kids are pissed.

In my post above, I tell you to ask Sarge. Sarge was a guy who was the designated altar "boy" his whole life at Guardian Angels. You would often see him roaming Beechmont Avenue talking to himself. He was mentally handicapped, or some might say "retarded". He was at all the parish festivals and was often hanging out with the priests at GA.

When Sarge was a young boy, he went whistling down Stansbury hill and mashed a tree with his head. He spent the rest of his life retarded. Sarge died about 8 years ago, but those who have lived in Mt Washington know his legacy. He lived a full life and died in his early 60's I believe.

It is a great hill and one I have been down many, many times. Just make sure you bail if you are getting close to the trees. It is a really fun hill to go down, not a fun hill to climb up from, and even less fun if you end up like Sarge.

In fairness, my understanding is that Cincinnati schools schedule 5 calamity days into their school year. If there are snow days in most Chicago schools, they add a day to the end of the year for each day missed. Some schools up there have already been closed three days this year.

Also, it's just not the same as it was when we were kids. The bus picks you up at your house, or your Mommy drives you to the bus stop in the Soccermommobile and keeps you all toasty warm while you wait for the bus. Or if you're the kind of pretentious shit that sends your kids to Summit, you have a major capital project to reconfigure the parking lot for 'car line' because little Ramrod Pennington IV can't possibly ride the bus.

I don't want to end up like Sarge. My youngest is five and he will want to go down the hill on his own. The first time we went sledding with my oldest I stressed how dangerous the trees were and taught him how to bail out. By the time we got to the top of the first hill he didn't even want to go down. Sarge is my nightmare.

Well, the general rule in college basketball is if they can get both teams and three refs in a gym, they will play the game. This is when it is time to be thankful that EVERY GAME THIS SEASON IS ON TV!

Duke (Energy, not the school!) is calling that tonight and tomorrow will be the worst ice storm this city has ever had, they fully predict the power WILL got out tonight, and they are already bringing in the reinforcements.

Lets see - a foot of snow by tomorrow morning covering up an ice rink from the "Worst ice storm ever" - I am already thinking tomorrow night I will be watching the game from Section 0, Row 1, Seat 1 in my living room, instead of Sec 208 at Cintas.

Besides the opponent is Charlotte, its not like we have Pitt coming in or anything like that.

However, I recall in a different thread Charlotte is flying in immediately before the game, airport conditions may be fine and dandy right now, but who knows about tomorrow!

well I guess compared to you it does, but seriously - no. And each time it does snow, it is mass chaos. However, if it does snow more than say 2-3 inches, it seems as if the city shuts down. (guessing that we don't have enough snow removal equipment). When you here about a lot of snow in Ohio, you're thinking of Cleveland which is about 3-4 hours north of here. Now they get hit all winter long and think we are insane down here.

Hell, it snows in Dayton a lot more than it does here, and they are only 40 miles north of us. Here in Cincy, we are insulated by the Ohio River valley which pushes most of the winter storms up north. When Dayton gets a foot, we may get 3-6 inches... or freezing rain.

White Death is in full force and effect here. Got about 2 inches of snow overnight last night, another 2-3 inches this evening and it is currently raining ice. During the night tonight, we will change back over to snow and get an additional 3-6 inches of snow on top of the ice and snow already on the ground. It is scheduled to stop at around 6 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. One casualty of the storm is my attending tomorrow night's game. Side streets were covered with a thick sheet of ice. But the main roads were fine (and I don't think salt was used. I think the pavement is too warm to form ice or something). In fact, I bet it's safer to drive now than your typical rush hour commute.

I don't want to end up like Sarge.

I think I am heading to Rapid Run in Price Hill. I wish I had a thermos to fill with some hot chocolate.

1) Too late
2) You wish for a thermos? What does a thermos run these days, three bucks? Fred didn't include one in the sleeping bag loaner package? What a welcher.

Yes. There's no salt. The main roads have a chip in them that tells them they are main roads. It gets them all excited, so they stay warmer than side road, despite being constructed of the exact same material. That makes total sense.

What is a welcher? Like a welched bet? Like I didn't pay?

I took Fred Garvin's sleeping bag. That is stone cold theft. I didn't bet Fred that I could do this or that over his sleeping bag and then not pay him. I just stole his sleeping bag.

That is not a welcher.

And I found a thermos anyway asswhipe. I didn't have to pay three bucks. I didn't want to drive to Walmart and then drive back home and fill a thermos with Hot Chocolate. That would expend more time than money. Suck my ass.

well I have had a great morning. Woke to find out I had a flat tire. Tried to use fix o flat, but it did not do the job but enough for me to get the car up to the corner to Duebber's. Had to wait an hour for them to open though. Got the tire fix, decided to venture to work in the Hamilton/Failfiled area.....was on 128 and wiped out without hitting another car or object but was facing towards home so I decided to go home. On the way home, wanted to turn off 50 to cut thru Addyston to get back to my part of Delhi well I wiped out there, again avoiding any cars or objects. Finally made it home where the driveway was being cleared for me. Called work and said I ain't coming in, so now I will work from home. Though I am ready for a beer or two after all that....

I read the article and I understand where the author is coming from. I don't know anything about what took place in Birmingham, but everyone here in Atlanta was talking about the coming snow. My iPhone had snow flakes in the forecast starting at 11:00, when it started snowing. That's fine if they don't want to invest in plows. I wouldn't either. Salt, yeah, not a bad investment. If you elect not to make that investment - don't open the schools. It also didn't help that the whole city closed up about 1:00 and we had an early rush hour all at once. In the past I've made fun of them shutting down the airport and closing schools with the prospect of snow in the forecast. I've lived up north and thought it was silly. I was wrong! Very wrong. Close up if you're not prepared. People don't know they can no longer tailgate and other basic "snow stuff". It gets ugly fast.
Having said all that, it was nice to see people in different neighborhoods coming out into the cold just to push strangers who couldn't make it up a hill. One after another. That kind of gives you a good feeling. People come together when things get difficult, whether it be a blizzard, a hurricane, or a light dusting in the south.
