For those of you who don't know....this is about as big time of a tourneyment as you get.

Gaston named MVP as Playaz win IS8 title

October 20, 2008
Chris Gaston, a 6-7 Fordham recruit who is attending Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, scored 25 points and was voted MVP as the Playaz Seniors defeated Juice All Stars, 96-81, to win the championship of the IS8 Fall League. Guards Tamir Jackson of St. Benedict’s and Dominic Cheek of St. Anthony’s (who didn’t play in the semis because he was making an official visit to Kansas) both added 18 for the winners.

Lance Stephenson of Lincoln led Juice with 23 points, but according to our guy Ron Naclerio of Cardozo, had difficulty getting open shots all game. Guard Darwin Ellis of Lincoln added 19 for Juice, but this one apparently wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.

Gaston and 6-3 guard Lance Brown of Paterson Catholic, who had 23 points for the Playaz, in the Saturday semis, are both committed to Fordham, which is a huge plus for Derek Whittenburg and his staff. Jackson is bound for UAB.

Stephenson, Cheek and Ellis are all still open.

Other players who made an impact over the weekend included guard Durand Scott (uncommited) of Rice and 6-9 Dan Jennings of South St. Thomas More (verbal with West Virginia), 6-6 Brian Oliver of New Castle, Del. (Georgia Tech verbal) of the Playaz, 6-8 Karon Johnson of Mt. Zion Academy in Durham, N.C. (uncommited) of Juice and three juniors - 6-7 Derrick Williams and 6-8 Devon Collier of St. Anthony’s and guard Devon McMillan of Uniondale, N.Y. - who all play for rising powerhouse New Heights.
