We've all humiliated ourselves with our first car already. For those that aren't still driving your first car, what is the best car you've ever had?
I had 2. After I rolled the Renault Alliance featured in the other post, I picked up a used 1980 Mazda RX-7, leather sport edition. I loved that car. That rotary engine was quick as hell. It had a pop-out sunroof that was almost the whole roof. The back end weighed nearly nothing, which made it nearly undrivable in the rain, much less snow. It also featured a manual choke, and had something called a 'heat converter' instead of a catalytic converter, which among other things, gave the car an extreme ability to backfire when cold. It was actually pretty funny.
Unfortunately, it also had an appetite for engine seals, and after the first $1,200 engine rebuild, I wasn't up for another one and sold the car in 1990.
A few years ago, I picked up a BMW M Roadster. In a lot of ways, similar to the Mazda, except the M was twice as fast. It was the only convertible I've owned, and it was a lot of fun. In a rare moment of maturity, I decided that fiscal responsibility was a priority over a second "fun" car that I only drove 3,000 miles a year, so I sold that one too. I sure do miss it on nice days though.
