NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Jerry Reed, a singer who appeared in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, has died of complications from emphysema at age 71, his longtime booking agent said Tuesday.

Carrie Moore-Reed, who is no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday morning.

Reed was a gifted guitarist who later became a songwriter, singer and actor.

As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, he had a string of hits that included "Amos Moses," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "East Bound and Down," and "The Bird."

In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, "Gator" "Hot Stuff" and "High-Ballin'."

Damn, I thought that meant that 8 was no longer the highest score you can put on your scorecard. My golf game would look a lot better with about 12 7's instead of 8's. I guess I will continue not playing until I am old enough to use graphite shafts and not get made fun of.

"When you're not, you're not." So long, Jerry.

"East Bound and Down" - arguably the best road song ever.

The Essential Jerry Reed has gotten plenty of play on my stereos.

Keep on trucking, Jerry.

I want Sean Miller to design a play called 'The Rocking Chair.'

Jerry Reed was the man. I always thought he was good in "Survivors."

East Bound and Down is my favorite country songs (granted, I'm not a country fan, but it's still a great song).

"The Survivors" is an underrated film. It might be the last time Robin Williams was manic and funny as opposed to just manic.

I love the scene when Reed is shooting at Williams as he hides behind a tree. He then realizes he brought the wrong bullets and pleads for timeout.
