Brad Redford is in this week's "Faces in the Crowd" section of Sports Illustrated.

Blurb reads:

Brad Redford
Frankenmuth, MI > Basketball
Brad, a senior guard at Frankenmuth High, set state records for three-pointers in a season (143), consecutive free throws (102), season free throw percentage (96.7), career free throw percentage (93.3) and most points in the first quarter (27). This season he averaged 36.7 points and was Michigan's Mr. Basketball.

No mention that he's going to X, but no big deal.

And this kid is a prime candidate to red-shirt???? This kid must play as a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.:D

And that is the beauty of this incoming class. It is so deep in guards, this kid is third best and would benefit from red-shirting.

Regardless if he comes to campus and solidifies he is the best of those guards. But better to make this decision now, in May, and get it out the way, so he can work on things like his shooting, his strength and his defense, right?

Just wondering, but does anyone know if this is the first time that Xavier has a recruit for basketball, or any other sport for that matter, in the Fresh Faces page?

I believe we have had at least one member of the now defunct rifle team featured in that section...

I think if you red shirt a Mr. Basketball, schools will use it against you in recruiting in the future. They might say, "go to X and they'll just stockpile you, whereas if you come to us, you can play."

Some members from the Polo team were in it back in the 70's. Also, I think one of the Wolf's made it in for tennis as well.

Jason Parker from the rifle team was in it. Nice kid.

I don't think it's called fresh faces. i think thats the name of your fetish porn.

Of course, everyone knows that a rash decision made by an internet poster who has never even seen any of the incoming freshmen play is the best decision. come on, DC, lighten up. I'm not a one man jury sealing his fate. I was trying to comment on the fact that the class is deep and he is not the most highly touted recruit coming in. And you can't argue that redshirting would be beneficial for almost any incoming freshman, minus the one year rentals.

I think the polo players were the Silber brothers, and one, Rob Silber died in an accident shortly thereafter. Not sure of the details though.

JoAnn Osterkamp was in the faces in the crowd section back when she played at X. My dad coached her in high school and she was my 7th grade math teacher, so I heard plenty about her. :)

With the 3 point line being adjusted, Redford.....from what I have seen on tape....will benefit and likewise, so will X. I´m not on the inside, but the idea of red shirting this kid seems a bit preposterous.

It's not preposterous at all. He would get little to no time at the 1 and he would be having to fight with Dante, BJ, and Cheeks for time at the 2. I would rather not use him next year and have a good four year with him than use him for 2 to 3 minutes a game.

It also would be a good idea to red shirt him for balance in the recruiting classes. We have 5 freshman next year and only two scholarships for 09. It would give us balance and also it would prevent a possible transfer. I think there is going to be a redshirt in this class, and Redford is the likely candidate. No doubt he can shoot but he needs strength to compete at a high level, a redshirt year would do him well.

Why don't you let these guys come in and see what they can do first before you comment that since he isn't the most highly touted recruit he should be the one to sit. With this type of talk David Freakin West would have red shirted.

And yes I can argue that red shirting wouldn't necessarily be beneficial for almost any incoming freshmen. There should be special circumstances, like Derrick Brown, when it comes to red shirting, not sitting a kid like Redford, simply because you think that because he wasn't ranked highly enough he should sit.

Redshirting this kid is the fastest way to loose future recruits with his obvious talents. Besides, the kid and his parents decide whether a recruit will or won't redshirt. He will not necessarily be playing the one. Rather the two. Cheeks will be primarily a one.
None of us really knows jack about who should redshirt or why. Instead of welcoming this kid and being enthusiastic about what he will be able to contribute, we're hellbent for leather to have him redshirt to balance the classes or whatever. And why? So we can say, "see, I was right and I know more than you do." Kind of like Sean Miller should not have been hired before a national search was conducted and a "name" coach interviewed.:D

I'm not going to make the guess of who (if anyone) will be redshirted, but it will be interesting to see how this offseason plays out. Four incoming guards plus two established ones (not counting Raymond) will make for scarce playing time for some. Not saying it will happen, but looking at the numbers, a redshirt may make sense for someone.
