Watching UCONN and SJU playing some very impressive hoops tonight. My daughter and I started up a perplexing conversation.
Given that-
Dixon
Kalk
Jones are nearly automatic AND...
with Ashworth putting up Kolek style POY numbers. The remaining 2 slots get highly debatable.
Is it possible that no player from tonight's showcase make the top honors? Surely Freemantle gets paid his respects by the coaches...right?
Solo Ball has emerged as UCONN's best player IMO, but Karaban will get the nod from the coaches as well. So that could round out the 6 player 1st team....could.
What do you guys think are the other possibilities?

Micah Peavy might get some run

I could see sorber, Luis, ball and karaban all getting long looks

It seems like the voters tend to pick just one guy on a team. I doubt Ashworth will make it, due to Kalk being such a lock.
As crazy as it sounds, I would expect a SJU player and a UConn player. I think that’s 5 spots. Sixth is up for grabs. Maybe Free??? Let’s hope he makes his case in the next month and a half

And yeah free will get a long look as well

Luis made a huge statement on this subject TONIGHT!!

And how TWO Georgetown players were mentioned in this thread is quite curious.

This is pretty lock-ish regardless.

Every game but ONE in double figure scoring? Leads the league in assists? Only TWO missed FTs at a stunning 97.6% clip.

I think Free would be considered ahead of Karaban.
If McNeely comes back stronger than ever, I believe he is a longshot.

Don’t hate the McNeeley idea, but missing 35%ish of conference play is a no for me.

Wow. There is some really interesting speculation going on here. This is a FIRST team discussion.
I am going to assume that anyone that cares, realizes 4 spots are not in question (especially after today). Unless the coaches are going to pass on Freemantle's top of the league type stats AND his inspired history....that leaves 1 spot.
There are realistically about 4 guys that have any chance....and 3 of them are on 2 teams. If Free goes 2nd team, things don't really change anything about those same 4 guys.
Considering FRESHMAN here is kinda ridiculous.

You know that sorber has a first round draft projection and has dozens of scouts at every one of his games, right? 15,8 and 2 blocks a game. He has similar offensive numbers to free and unlike free, can play defense.

Yes, great stats for sure....on a mediocre team.
That said, are you saying that the coaches of this league would ever disrespect upperclassmen....with better stats....and years of continuing to keep this conference at an elite level?

Why does the BE have 6 guys? Seems like pretty much every other “all-XXX” team is just 5. And some kind a stick to positions…kinda.
I don’t see Ashworth as a lock. But not because he’s not worthy. It’s because it seems like the voters (not even sure who votes) often tend to spread the votes around and reward teams that finished high with no “stars”. SJU must have a first team guy. Richmond? Luis?
I feel like the top 4 teams will get a guy each. Right or wrong. Last 2 spots up for grabs. Sorber is absolutely in the mix. Free too. Ashworth obviously is too, and it will just come down to how many teams the award gets spread out to.

I am predicting Free and Ball with the other 4.
But man it's a really tough call!!

The coaches vote Hett. 1 guy gets POY, then the next 5 vote getters.
2 players from the same team is very common.

Guys that are 5th in scoring and the top assist man do not miss the 1st team....like ever.....in any conference.
If I am wrong, can someone explain otherwise?

Locks:
Dixon
Kalk
Jones
Probables:
Ashworth
Luis
Free in the convo for the 6th but can’t see no one from UConn.

With all said and done and not much going on until Thursday....good time to bring this back to the top. What has changed?
The biggest change for me is Luis is now a lock. In fact, I have heard multiple talking heads touting him POY....with CONFIDENCE!
I am starting to agree. Today he was outstanding....AGAIN.
But man, he is a 2nd year BE, transfer guy. How can he get it over TWO 5 year BE guys....1 being arguably the greatest player in Creighton history and the other the NATIONAL scoring leader?
My final prediction-
POY- Kalk
Luis Jr.
Jones
Dixon
Ashworth
Freemantle
ALL FRESHMAN
Sorber*
McNeeley
McAndrew
Mela

Free deserves it. He's been nails this year. Double digits every game he played. Consistent good to great results EVERY night.
Beauty of playing in a great conference, you have to be great to make it. He's been great this year.

Ok, call me confused. You knew it would be Kalk, Cam & Dixon. I assumed an SHU guy. I wasn’t sure who until recently with Luis. They you have 2 spots left. I figured not Ashworth due to Creighton already having Kalk. I did not expect Ejiofor. Or Peavy. Free and Ashworth have a bone to pick

In regard to free, he’s a hell of an offensive player, and he’s played out of position all year so that’s even more impressive. With all that said, he’s below average defensively, so for zuby to be picked over him, I don’t know if I can gripe about it all that much

For anyone paying attention to the BE and the last 3-4 years, the nod should have gone to Zac. He's endured a rash of injuries and sat out an entire year. To come back from all of that and average 17 & 7 is damn impressive. Zuby can earn his 1st Team next year.

You can bet your "Ash-worth" they do!! Peavy is an absolute stunner. Ashworth's season stats mirrors last years POY Kolek....POY. On an arguably better 2nd place team.
For 10 BE coaches to deny a SIX YEAR career BIG EAST guy like Zach, knowing his inspirational story, is an absolute travesty.

In Zach's 2nd year at X, didn't he win most improved or comeback player of year?
He should be a lock to win it this season.

Not sure about other players and injuries they may have had. But wonder if Zach missing three games, two of which against UConn and Marquette, played a factor at all. I was surprised at Peavy as well.

You've got the best team and nobody on the first-team all-conference team? It's ridiculous. You talk about not having motivation? We got plenty now. I'm really looking forward to (New York) now.

Luis wins be player of the year. I dunno how I feel about that… kinda get it but take kalk off creighton and I think they would suck so he’d be my choice

I feel like "best player" and "most valuable player" are two different things in the eyes of the voters here.
