This kid does have game! Made HUGE jump in rankings after monster Under Tournament averaging 26+. Some rankings now have him in top 50 in 19 class. As Banners noted, X was favorite because of early interest and his knowledge of the program. Unfortunately, they also commented the longer he goes uncommitted, the chances he chooses X are slim. UK looking at him and just got offer from CM

It seems like we get in on people early but never get the luck of having them commit, hopefully Allen is different. We had a really unlucky cycle last year, and it'd be great if we could fill 2019 with some studs to get back on track. Fingers crossed Steel and co. built good rapport with him, and he wants to take X to new heights!

Word locally is that he is waiting to see if UK offers. Coach Cal was at the game where he scored 30+. He is probably going to be the favorite for player of the year in KY, but that doesn’t mean an automatic offer from UK by any means. Most locals are hoping that it will be X if it isn’t UK. WVU, Va Tech, Vandy, and Perdue are all involved too.

According to Verbal Commits, 24/7, and Rivals UK has NOT offered yet. But they are hoping that he will do an unofficial visit sometime soon, and he may get an offer then. He has jumped into the #46 spot in the Rivals top 150 and is now ranked the top recruit in KY.

Pendleton County Ky has a population of right at 14,000. It’s very small and very rural. News travels fast around there. If he had an offer from UK it would be front page news in the Falmouth Outlook and people would be talking about it all the time. UK basketball is not quite a religion there, but it’s close. It’s actually in some ways more important than religion, because while churches seem to break up and reform all the time, UK BB love remains consistent. It unites the community, religion seems to separate it. My wife went to school there, we lived in the country for 11 years until we moved back north a year ago, we still attend church there (and always will), and I play in a county golf league every Monday. Unless something has changed in the last 48 hours, he hasn’t gotten the offer.....yet......or they are keeping it real quiet.

Not quite....it only seems that way sometimes.

When I said country, I ment “out in the sticks”. Out in Pendleton county, not in any of the towns within the county. Our son moved into the old home place (my father in law built it upon coming back from WWII and lived there the rest of his life) when he got out of the USAF and we moved up to the southern outskirts of Cincinnati (10 mins to downtown). He just moved to Florence and I’m cleaning and painting it now so that we can sell it in the Spring. Sits on 4 acres that were part of the original 300 acre farm that my mother in law was born on. Land has been in my wife’s family for at least 5 generations. Going to be hard to sell it for my wife. We were married in the church out there that my wife grew up in. I’m a deacon there and she plays the piano/organ every Sunday.

After looking at chatter about Dontaie after the Under Armour tournament, I saw a tweet of top performers he was on and noticed a second name on the list - Devin Butts. After tournament, kid got a scholarship offer from X and has interest. He’s from Georgia so sure Coach Hayes has been scouting him. Based off some accounts, he is 3 star recruit but not ranked anywhere. After watching a little video, I was impressed with his ability to shoot and pass off the dribble. Very surprised on the lack of ranking and other offers. X and Houston were only majors.

Does anyone from the Georgia area know anything about this kid? Looks like he comes from good pedigree as his father played at Texas Tech and was second leading scorer.

I really hope that Donte comes to X. I think that he will be a great fit for both the B.B. team and the school and will really enjoy his time there. It would be real fun for my wife and I t watch a local kid playing against the BE teams on national TV. It would be real big for the community too. I’m afraid that at UK he would be just another player. But at X he can be a star.

I think that’s an enormous point that is often overlooked by kids who want to be courted by the biggest names they can attract. That’s not always the wise move.

Yeah but he'd still get a lot of exposure at UK, a more storied program, and probably a better chance to the NBA. I love X as much as everyone else here, but until we get more guys in the league and get a reputation for developing current NBA players, there's still going to be a bunch of kids who rather go to UK. Especially ones from Kentucky.

That’s a solid point. You can ask 85% of the people who grew up in KY who their favorite team is, and they will say UK (the other 15% grew up on Loserville). It doesn’t matter if they went to another college instate or out of state, or where they now live. Love of UK is ingrained through the generations and runs deep. I can’t imagine an instate kid ever turning down a BB scholarship offer from UK and going anywhere else (other than UL). I’m sure it’s happened before, but it would something extremely rare. There is also somewhat of a bias AGAINST Ohio and Indiana on the part of many within the state. But strangely enough, there has always seemed to be solid respect and even like for Xavier on the part of many people around the state, especially from within the area known as the “Golden Triangle” (NKY-Lexington-Louisville). I’ve heard many residents of Pendleton Co. express that they hope that if he doesn’t go to UK, that they hope he goes to X. They want to be able to go watch him play in person and don’t much care for UC or UL.

If those are "unofficial" visits would it not signal to the man that UK/Uof L are not that interested ? Lots take "unofficial" visits when they are just "exploring" the landscape, but if you have offers in hand from other definite alternatives...

No. A player can only take 5 official visits. If the player lives close to the school it's usually not wise to waste them on a school that a parent can easily just drive the kid to or have himself drive to. It's better to use those paid/official visits on schools that are farther away. I have no idea if that applies in this case but that's my guess.

Yup, Mitten posted that a few posts ago, we'll know whether he gets an offer or not soon. Obviously if he does I don't like our chances very much, especially with all things considered. However, recruiting is a strange game, you never really know until they get on campus, and even then you don't know due to transfers and what not. Hopefully we get him, looks like he has some major game, but if not, it's on to the next one, we still have a chance at a pretty damn good class of 2019 if pieces around Elias King come together.

I think that it might not be quite the slam dunk I thought that might be. UK is hosting Kahlil Whitney Aug 3-4 for an official visit. Donte is visiting Aug 1 for an unofficial visit. Whitney is probably their 1st choice, and he definitely is a one and done player. I don’t see Donte being the same, and Donte hasn’t even gotten an offer from them yet. From young Mr. Allen's perspective, that should be only one issue; Cal's penchant is one & done players so every --repeat EVERY-- class Cal will recruit at least one near NBA ready player at Mr. Allen's position. He may see some minutes during his career but at best he will be only just another guy in blue sweat pants hoping to contribute to an NCAA FF team. Without "negative" recruiting,XU can show him better 4 year opportunity toward both contributing to FF caliber teams and NBA prospects; that's not to say he will be anointed and lacking internal competition, just that the team structure and chemistry will afford him better opportunity in both short and long term.

If it's all about getting to the NBA for him and not caring at all about an education, then I'm okay with him not coming to X. Cal may have great NBA connections, but will he be as dedicated to making sure his kids get a good education as Steele will be? I think not. If Allen is truly an NBA caliber player, scouts will see it whether he goes to X or Kentucky.

I hate to burst your bubble but most of not all major div 1 recruits are all about going to the NBA. It’s their dream because they are great at playing basketball. It doesn’t mean they don’t care about education at all if they choose UK (or most anywhere else) over X. If he said he was coming to X for a year or two then leaving you wouldn’t want him? Yeah I agree, Cal may be scummy, but he does help these kids in whatever way they want, if he didn't he wouldn't be getting high level recruits, word of mistreatment travels around. But agree with the sentiments here, good luck to Dontaie, if it was his dream to play for UK, he reached his goal, and that's great for him. Of course Cal is not going to ignore a kids desire to get an education. That’snot what I’m saying. Though the place has positioned itself (to recruits) more like “the Cal factory to get kids to the NBA” than it has a university where pushing kids to get a good education is as much the mission as is a commitment to get several kids to the NBA each year.

You’re right ... our school isn’t known for helping its players cheat on test to get them eligible like one of the universities above got nailed for doing and our school actually gives out scholarships for kids to get a education- not for a one year NBA audition like another school listed above.

I am not knocking Dontaie for choosing Kentucky. I just have never seen X as a “less than” school. I see my alma mater as an very good school with an excellent basketball program that just continues to keep getting better.

If a kid has all of the necessary skills to play in the NBA, he is going to get there whether he is at a school like X or Kentucky or Duke or Kansas or Gonzaga or Villanova. They are all very good schools that get plenty of exposure. X basketball has continued its climb of success throug every conference it joined and it continues to reach new heights. That is damn impressive.

The NBA audition factory has been more of a recent trend, as all the schools above had 4 year guys in the past, and I'm also not convinced that if a one and done wanted to come to Xavier we would say no. In terms of established prestige, we aren't any of the blue bloods, it doesn't mean I don't think our alma mater is great in every regard. I agree I do love that we do things the right way, and that we never seem to get implicated in any of these scandals. However, if we're being honest with ourselves, when kids grow up they have ambitions for playing for UK, Duke, etc. Does that mean we can't change it in the future? No, however, we need to establish ourselves at a higher level. A final four, a national championship, etc. There's nothing wrong with our program, we're trending upwards, and putting ourselves in a better position each season to make that next jump.
