Amazing improvement in the free throw shooting of all the Xavier players from last year to this year;

Bluiett .754 >.877
Macura .785 >.854
Jones .488 >.628
Gates .722 >.818
O'Mara .684 >.906
Goodin .575 >.892

All returning players show significant improvement with Jones, O'mara and Goodin bordering on remarkable. Is it great coaching with improvement in technique or is it mostly mental?

90% of free throw shooting is half mental.

I appears they are feeling pretty confident there. That comes with time spent there practicing. VERY impressive!

I noticed right away this season that O'Mara's form was perfect, like a machine built to make free throws. Goodin's performance at the line may be the deciding factor in many games this year.

This will be very important down the stretch if they can continue this, it's been half a season so the confidence should be there, just goes to show the guys have really put in time in working on aspects of their game. Really proud of them, and the coaching staff as a whole for instilling that type of work set into the players.

Not being able to shoot FT is the most frustrating thing to see, esp. in crucial situations. We had that problem so often in the past. I am so glad that we overcome that this year, and in a big way so far. It makes watching the game a lot more pleasurable.

The across the board significant improvement is incredible and unheard of! Lot's of teams put in "hard work" to improve, but never do and yet our entire team has improved significantly. I would love to know the secret...

Don't jinx it.

Probably from steroids or HGH.

So, as long as they keep taking them...we're good.

Usually we have 1 or more BIGS who can't hit FTs, so they get fouled often. Now we have 3 Bigs (SOM, Jones, Kantner) all shooting FT well.
This reminds me of the BEST 3 BIGS I ever saw in the same year on an XU team. The season was 1990 and we had Tyrone Hill & Derrik Strong as Seniors and a Freshman Aaron Williams (who I still think is #1 in all time Blocks). All 3 were decent at FTs, so who did you foul? Same thing now. Since we are currently #1 or #2 in the country in FT Pct, opponents are wary to foul any of our shooters. This may be helping us get better looks, especially inside. ps- I just joined xavierhoops and can anybody explain how I can start a new thread.

Free throw shooting by the bigs is huge , as it is for the whole team. Pick your poison - especially at the end of games.

Go to the MENS BASKETBALL (or any other FORUM) and there will be an option to start a new thread.

Fortunately, Coach Mack reads this messageboard, and I feel certain that he saw some posts last season expressing concern about free throw shooting. That helped him realize the importance of it, and he made it a priority for this team. You're welcome Coach, and keep up the good work!

as a math tutor your inequalities are mixed.
Should be:
Bluiett .754 <.877

Most of those big men were AWFUL their frosh years with FTs. Strong played 3 years I believe.

Well, Tyrique laid an egg at the line today. It reminds me a couple of years ago when Reynolds had a similar game.

I watched Jones make 8 in a row at halftime and then proceed to brick two more in second half. It's a mental thing now with him.

7 misses in a row and not one of them even came close. Definitely mental but it hurts our opportunity to have him in the game at key times. His form had improved dramatically and hopefully he has just had a temporary lapse.

At least they put a chokehold on today's game with FTs in the final minutes.

Hitting em down the stretch in a close game matters more than anything else to me, even Scruggs hit 2 big ones. Proud of em, it'll be okay, they're not going to have too many nights like today where they just brick an insane amount.

We ended up just under 64% against SH, which was a big improvement since we were under 50% early in the 2nd half. We need to get back to shooting like we were before conference play started. 64% will cost us a win or two in BE play.
