I was stunned to learn that most of the rail system in the United States (over 60,000 miles worth) is not engineered for high-speed travel.
Also, Amtrak does not own most of the rail it goes over; it mostly uses rail owned by the large freight-centric railroad companies.
So you climb on board an Amtrak train that intends to go 80 mph and it derails when it reaches 79 mph, or something like that. No seatbelts on trains.
Again, how on God's earth could anyone think to provide such a service when the engineering simply isn't there and everyone knows it.
