Awful news this morning - word out of Miami is that Marlins P Jose Fernandez died overnight in a boating accident. Miami has already cancelled their game with the Braves today.

Thoughts and prayers to his family and the Marlins.

That guy was the best pitcher in baseball. He had a crazy bright future. So sad.

His last start: 8 shutout innings, 3 hits, 0 walks, 12 strikeouts.

Classic Jose Fernandez.

Devastated by the news. He was a really great guy and a hell of a talent. As a kid he gave up everything to seek a better life with his family. He saved his mother from drowning after she fell off the raft; he didn't even know it was her until she was back on the boat. A 15 year old risked his life to save what he thought was a total stranger. RIP.

Tragic. Horrible news for the game of baseball. He had the talent to be one of the game's all time greats, and a charismatic personality to match. Just tragic. RIP Jose.

An absolute gut punch to anyone who is fan of baseball.

Saw his first game ever a few years ago. He was different.

My favorite memory of him is him making Chris Johnson and Brian McCann mad after he hit his first home run. He was being him and being awesome, those two were being themselves and therefore being miserable. It was good shit.

It's so sad when something like this happens. In the last two years baseball has lost two young stars to shocking accidents: Oscar Taveras and Jose Fernandez. It's just hard to believe when you hear it. You get that sinking feeling in your stomach. It's horrible.

Okay, it's been a day. Is it now okay for me to ask what the fuck Jose and his buddies were doing out flying around on a boat at 3:30 in the morning?

This is what I asked some friends of mine yesterday. Why are you on a boat at 3am during the season with a pregnant girlfriend at home?

There probably wasn't a very good reason but he was 24 years old probably doing 24 year old things.

Yeah, it's OK to ask, and we probably have a good idea. Very sad, and certainly not wise.

Truly truly devastating. If you have a chance, you should check out the Marlins players before and after the game on the field. Absolutely heartbreaking. Can't remember a sporting event I've ever witnessed that was remotely like tonight.

I've not seen a player hit a HR and then break down in tears of sadness before tonight.
