That's correct. They won't be on campus until the 22nd, so I'd imagine their first game will be the 28th or 29th.

Looks to be the case. See here (http://www.radioiowa.com/2014/06/13/summer-college-basketball-leagues-adjust-to-new-ncaa-rules/) or here (http://www.cardiachill.com/2014/6/3/5774488/greentree-summer-league-2014-pittsburgh-basketball-club-pitt-basketball-pittsburgh-panthers).
To see what they have for rosters at the moment, go to http://cincysportsworld.com/City_Gear__summer_League.html
go almost all the way to the bottom and click on Gamecast, then towards the bottom again is last year's results, but the links (Schedule/Teams/Stats) are all for this season.
As for the important ones, here is how they have them broken down at the moment:

I'd have to think this league will only get better with the infusion of more D1 talent coming from NKU. It should be fun to watch.
That's unfortunate about the new rule of only two college teammates per squad, but at least they are getting out there and testing themselves in a city with ample talent.

I think most of these types of tourneys have gone to this format (capped number of players).

No freshman today, but many of the veterans showed up today.
The highlight was defintely the Clovernook Health Care (James Farr) vs. Ignition (Remy Abell, Jalen Reynolds) game. Farr may have outplayed Reynolds - he definitely did statistically (16 & 21 for Farr, 15 & 8 for Reynolds). Abell put up 39 to lead all scorers on the day, although Clovernook won, 82-69. Clovernook also had Daniel Camps (NKU), summer leagues vets Quantez Robinson (Auburn) and Evan Yates and the Mitchell brothers (Cameron and Kevin) who led Taft to a state title. Ignition also had Brad Loesing (St. x/Wofford) and Michael Davenport (Moeller/St.Bonnies).
Tim Stainbrook had 2 points for Friars club in a 75-70 loss to SLATS.
Myles Davis and Matt Stainbrook played for City Taxx, which clobbered Jackson All-Stars, 78-32, in the final game of the day. Stainbrook was the leading scorer with 21 points and was rewarded for running the floor with a couple of easy baskets. Davis didn't do anything special, missing the only three he took.
CLOVERNOOK HEALTH CARE
James Farr 16 pts, 21 reb (7-17 fg, 2-3 ft)
IGNITION
Remy Abell 39 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 3 to (13-28 fg, 4-7 3pt, 9-12 ft)
Jalen Reynolds 15 pts, 8 reb, 4 to (7-14 fg, 1-2 ft)
FRIARS CLUB
Tim Stainbrook 2 pts, 2 reb (1-4 fg, 0-3 3pt)
CITY TAXX
Myles Davis 7 pts (3-5 fg, 0-1 3pt, 1-1 ft)
Matt Stainbrook 21 pts (8-9 fg, 5-5 ft), 5 reb.

That's unfortunate about the new rule of only two college teammates per squad.
The summer league has always had the rule of a maximum of 2 current players per summer league team. In years past, they would allow all recruits for one program to play together, and they did not count against the 2 player max. In years past, you would see a UC summer league team with 4 new recruits and 2 existing players (as an example).
If they didn't change the rule, Xavier could have put a team on the floor this year that went 7 or 8 deep with Xavier players. I was looking forward to seeing all 6 of our recruits on the same team, but with the new rule, it looks as though they are spread around on a lot of other teams.
It is probably the right thing to do. Just wish they would have changed the rule next summer.

I liked.
Remy,, just seeing him on the court, lots of skills, he looks like a highlight reel
Farr,, seeing more of his ability to move the ball, very nice addition to his game
Jalen, while many on xavierhoops will note his ability to dunk with 2 or one hands, he is able to put the ball on the floor. still a screaming man flying to the rim!
Myles, confident, scoring from all over the court

The only problem with some of the Jalen highlights were that they came at Farr's expense. Stainbrook looked heavier to me. Has he added some weight this offseason?

Agree on Stainbrook and his apparent trips to Skyline and Jalen's abuse of Jimmy on some of those plays.
I hope Stainbrook and Davis get themselves in shape, as they look more inline for the Alumni game than The Big East.

Stainbrook may have had to limit some of the offseason workouts while he healed so he does have somewhat of an excuse.

04 Farr, James CLOVERNOOK 6-11 0-1 2-3 5 -11 -16 2 14 2 0 2 0 24
Ignition (Abell & Reynolds) beat CincySportsworld, a team of mostly current and potential Cincinnati State players, 77-64. I know that doesn't sound impressive, but they are usually the team that plays actual team basketball the most.
CityTaxx (M.Davis) beat Deer Park Roofing, 92-85. Deer Park Roofing is still missing guys (more on that later).
Clovernook (Farr) beat SLATS, 78-61. The only player of note for SLATS is Tayler Persons, an NKU recruit from Indiana.
Rumor has it Bluiett and Sumner will play for Deer Park Roofing tomorrow (Sunday 1 pm against Jackson All-Stars, who have Jordan Jackson and Todd Johnson from NKU).

Blueitt will be instant impact. It will be hard to keep Sumner off the court if he can shoot and play like he did today.
While he most definitely needs to add 30 pounds or so he can just flat out ball. I agree he will be a great get for this class. Looks like he could run the point too honestly.
Jalen just had his way whenever he wanted it. Had some monster dunks. Was fun to watch.

Myles Davis played in the first game, finally getting some shots to fall to help CityTaxx beat Friars Club, 71-56. At one point Jamal Walker (aka the guy who talks the entire game) joked he was 3-for-70 on the year. Friars Club has Tyler White, a guard from NKU, and two incoming Miami recruits, Roderick Mills and John Hawkins (a 7-footer who was 1-for-5 from the field).
The second game was the introduction of the freshman with Bluiett and Sumner's Deer Park Roofing team beating Austin and O'Mara's Jackson All-Star team, 91-68. None of them started, but got a smattering of applause upon entering. Bluiett seems pretty filled out already, bodywise, and did a little bit of everything. Sumner shot pretty well - 3 of 4 from three and 6 of 9 overall. Austin even clapped from the bench when they hooked up for a dunk at one point. O'Mara and Austin didn't stand out too much - it looks like O'Mara has some solid moves in the post, but didn't have a great game finishing.
Until the very end, Ignition (Reynolds & Abell) and BobSumerel (Drew Mitchell - apparently he's a walk-on) was the best game. Reynolds went head-to-head with NKU grad Jalen Billups, who had 23 points (10-of-15 shooting) but only 3 rebounds. Reynolds also had a between-the-legs, behind-the-back assist (that's the best way I can describe it). The game was back-and-forth with Bob Sumerel making 15 of 32 3-pointers to stay in it. Ignition was up two, 84-82, when Chad Jackson of NKU hit a 3-pointer with under 10 seconds to go to put Bob Sumerel ahead. Ignition threw the ball ahead to Abell, who was all alone on a run-out for the go-ahead basket with five seconds left when... well you know the rest.
After a rather sobering, and not very good game with no XU players, SuperiorCars.com (Makinde and Macura) finished out the day by beating Clovernook (Farr), 80-72. Farr, who Jamal Walker said several times "gets all the rebounds", was often head-to-head with Montrezl Harrell of Louisville (22 pts on 9-15 shooting, 5 rebounds, 1 block). London is a long body who likes to hang out at the 3-point line (I just realized all his shots were 3-pointers). I don't think Macura was out there long enough to get too good a feel of things.

Here was my take on the freshman:
Larry Austin - Larry wasn't too impressive. He was trying pretty hard on defense...but that said he still got burned several times I'd say. He's definitely not a scorer but also didn't have many weapons to distribute to either. Of the 4 freshman I saw play he was the least impressive.
Sean O'Mara - Had some decently developed post moves. A year of going up against Reynolds and Stainbrook in practice will be very good for him. Also very physical and relentless player. I doubt we'll see much out of him this year but honestly seems like he will be very good down the line.
Blueitt - I wouldn't go so far as to say believe the hype but he will be a big time contributor on this team. Did literally everything on the court whether it was running the point (as much as you can in summer league) or guarding O'Mara. He looks like he's gained some muscle recently and slimmed down a bit. He was everywhere on the court though even in limited minutes.
Sumner - I was most impressed with him. Yeah he really needs to gain about 30 lbs but man can he ball. You can see it in that dunk in the video but I saw it even more so watching him Dunk during shoot around he has that extra gear he puts into his step when lifting off. Reminds of Westbrook/Rose going up for a dunk they just kind of elevate above the rim with ease. He had no problem knocking down NBA 3s or driving to the hoop. In terms of weight he was likely the smallest player out there, but he didn't shy away from anything. He made some incredible passes as well that really lead me to believe he might be the answer at point guard rather thank Randolph/Austin. Him and Blueitt seemed to just have instant chemistry.
Abel was impressive, his shots were rimming out a bit but everything I've read is true. I don't think we'll miss a beat with Maj gone in terms of a slasher that can get to the rim. Abel can do that no problem. Hope he's okay and has ample recovery time.

Yes indeed. That was awesome news. Hoping for a quick recovery.... and then I want to wrap all these guys in bubble wrap and put them on a shelf somewhere until the season starts. I know you'd probably get in trouble with the law for that, but I'd rest easier.

We would also be a horrible, out-of-shape and likely malnourished team. Stainbrook would probably develop rickets.

Maybe even some "bubble sores". I know they need to play and be challenged and get in shape. I just hate this time of year. It's like the NFL preseason, you just hope there is no news - zero - for your team, because it's rarely good news. The big news is always who lost a stud for the season. I had just seen the Remy video (which pleasantly surprised me), then heard he hurt a knee. Not a good feeling.

I remember Farr wanting to shoot (too many) threes, but I don't remember Reynolds especially having an outside shot. His game seems to be expanding. I'm pretty excited to see what he brings this season. I realize summer league is never like the really season, but this still looks great.
If Farr and Reynolds can keep their fouling under control and play strong defense our game tempo could ratchet up rather fast.

I went back and looked at some of his high school games in Detroit and he was shooting threes and handling the ball really well back then. I was surprised too. We will probably be lucky to have him more than another year or two and he will be NBA bound imo.

I recall a story from Mack saying that when they first noticed Reynolds, it was actually because of his outside game (this, before he added several inches). If he puts in the work (and I have no reason to believe he won't) and stays healthy, I think the sky is the limit for Jalen.

No doubt. The ceiling for Jalen Reynolds is scary high. If he puts it all together, he could certainly be the next Xavier great. I don't want him to fall in love with the perimeter game too much like Derrick Brown did at times in his last year though. It's a beautiful thing to feature a lineup where all five guys could hurt you from deep, but I think the potential for Reynolds to be dominant in and around the paint is so high. Stretching it out a little would be icing on the cake. I definitely think he could end up being a high NBA pick if he does the right things.

I agree he has high upside a good career ahead of him...but at the same time he'll be all of 24 when he graduates which is pretty old in NBA scouting eyes.
That's true, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't stay long enough to expire his eligibility.

From Ann Arbor so I see a lot of UofM and it's not even comparable. Beilein specifically recruits great catch and shoot guys and stretch 4s. He also runs an offensive system predicated on ball movement, which never seems to be a strength for these Mack teams. It works for them because its a system with everyone buying into it
I think it would be great if every player on the floor is capable from outside and forces defenses to be honest in that regard. I just think it would be a waste if Reynolds fell in love with the perimeter given what he can bring in the post. And for the record, I don't expect that to happen by any means, but I'm just saying it would be a shame if it did to me. I think Derrick Brown struggled at certain times in his final year to find a good balance between the perimeter and post. Brown was such a good rebounder on both ends and was a beast above the rim down low. But by his third year there were certain games/stretches where he hung out on the perimeter way too much. Sometimes he got hot, but I think overall he was kind of limiting himself as a player sometimes. I have no problem with Jalen being able to stretch the defense. If he could do that well, he could become unstoppable. But there needs to be the right balance because his ceiling as a low post threat and rebounder on both ends is far too high.

I was impressed with Jalen's passing last year. Saw some good high-low post passes between Jalen and Stain. Jalen also seemed to do a pretty good job of kicking the ball to the opposite side on post ups. Not something I expected coming from a raw freshmen.

He had a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds), leading his team in both categories in a 75-68 win against CincySportsWorld.com (the Cincinnati State team). He showed some good athleticism with a nice dunk or two, although I think he'll have to do some work to get on the floor.

I would like to see big Jalen use his shooting and ball handling skills around the perimeter enough to make opponents defense honest. If a defender comes out on him too tight he can use a fake and drive to the goal. If they lay back too much then he could drop a jump shot on them. He is so big and strong with his jumping ability though, he does need to spend the majority of the time down low imo. I also think it's great that we have a player who's got the NBA type body and skill set to bring up a conversation like this. To me, the future is about as bright as I can remember for X and it's basketball fans.

Greg Howard was actually quite fun to watch. Anyone know anything about this guy?
He went to Withrow and then it looks like he bounced around a number of small colleges (I've seen his name at West Liberty, Walsh Univ. and Ohio Midwestern). Likewise, he's bounced around some of the lower professional leagues here (UBA & ABA) and earlier this year he was playing in Venezuela for a team called Guaiqueries de Margarita.
Here is his Eurobasket page (well, since it's Venezuela, I guess it's a Latinbasket page): http://basketball.latinbasket.com/player/Venezuela/Guaiqueries_de_Margarita/Gregory_Howard/139277
Stats from Venezuela:
http://www.sportingpulse.com/team_info.cgi?action=PSTATS&pID=197618258&client=1-10146-150389-292156-20283747
and, if you know some Spanish, an article about him signing with that team:
http://www.deportesmargarita.com/baloncesto/gregory-howard-y-francisco-centeno-a-la-tribu/
I remember Richard Skinner wrote about him in the Enquirer after he was the leading scorer in last year's championship game, but I'm guessing you'd have to pay to read that from their archives.

Randolph, as mentioned, played in the last game. Not a great shooting day, but he did have seven assists. His game ended up being called a tie when it was still tied 83-83 after overtime with some of the players needing to leave.
I guess Trevon Bluiett snuck in under the radar on Sunday. He played in the second-to-last game. My first thought on looking at all those stats that he was awesome to put up for us all, is that man, Brandon's FG% this summer was less than awesome. I know it doesn't matter in the least bit, but lets not see that % in the winter.

O'Mara had 13/10 in that game and B Randolph with 31 in the next game (win) for his team.

I'd love to see that one. The season can't come soon enough.
On a slightly more concerned note, we have some pretty good FT % stats above, and more than a few that concern me some. That was a weakness last year and I was hoping it was something that was going to change. For some guys it was hopefully just a small sample size. That's the optimist in me.

The rest of the games are all at Woodward. All the XU players who could have showed up today did (except maybe Tim Stainbrook).
The end of the Jackson All-Stars v. SLATS game was very interesting. SLATS was up by 2 with 20 seconds to go after hitting one of two free throws. Jackson All-Stars tied the score on a putback with 7 seconds left. After SLATS inbounded it, Larry Austin stole it in the back court and laid it in to put Jackson ahead by 2. SLATS went down and missed a three at the buzzer, but they called a foul with 0.4 left. SLATS only made one of the three free thows, and Jackson moved on.
Austin did have a couple nice drives to the backet, but had just 10. O'Mara had 13 pts / 10 rebs, but the guy he was going against, Corey Hunter (http://www.fvsusports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1082&path=mbball) had 21 and 14, although Hunter also ended up fouling out early.
Randolph helped Friars Club win after going winless in the regular season, and in maybe a bigger upset, had more points and shots than teammate Paul McMillian. CincySportsWorld had a chance to go up 4 with a minute to go, but tried an off-the-backboard alley-oop and Randolph went down and scored on an and-1 to put Friar's Club up to stay.
Here are the stats from Saturday:

A sparce showing today- just Myles Davis and Brandon Randolph played. Most of the games were blowouts, too, until the last one (with no XU guys) which was odd:
Davis was the leading scorer among a team that had six in double figures and won, 105-75. Randolph was second-leading scorer and had one of five assists for a team that was drilled by the #1 seed, 82-48.
No. N A M E FGM-A3PM-A FT-FTA OF-DE-TOT PF TP A TO BLK S MIN
02 Davis, Myles 7-13 3-8 10-11 1-2-3 0 27 6 1 0 4 28
24 Randolph, Brandon6-11 0-3 2-2 0-3-3 1 14 1 2 0 2 32
In what would have been the Bluiett/Sumner vs. London/Macura game (none of them showed), Montrezl Harrell of Louisville broke the backboard with a dunk a minute into the game (picture in the tweet above) and the whole thing moved to the Friars Club in St.Bernard that I don't think is technically open to the public yet. Harrell's team ended up losing, so Bluiett and Sumner are still eligible to play. Everything is supposed to be fixed and ready to go for Friday at Woodward, so the remaining playoff schedule remains:
Friday, Aug 1, 6:30 pm - #3 City Taxx vs. #2 Clovernook Health Care
(Myles Davis played today, I think Matt Stainbrook is done for City Taxx. James Farr has not showed up since the first few games for Clovernook, and Dee Davis has not showed up at all)
Friday, Aug 1, 7:30 pm - #4 Deer Park Roofing vs. #1 AAA Bob Sumerel Tire & Service
(Bluiet has played twice and Sumner once for Deer Park. Only walk-on Drew Mitchell plays for Bob Sumerel.
The Championship Game is set for 1:30 on Saturday, August 2.

The semifinals are tonight. City Taxx (maybe Myles Davis and probably not Matt Stainbrook) vs. Clovernook (probably not James Farr, but maybe CJ Anderson) at 6:30. Top-seeded AAA Bob Sumerel Tire & Service vs. Deer Park Roofing (maybe Bluiett & Sumner) after that.

In the end, except for Kayla Davis attending the Championship game, it was a Xavier-less final weekend for the summer league. The games were all still pretty good:
Friday, City Taxx came back from 12 down to tie Clovernook at 80 with a minute left in the first semifinal, but Clovernook scored the final eight to win, 88-80. Rick Broernig had a write-up on it in the Enquirer: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/2014/08/01/city-gear-semi-final/13495425/
In the second game, it looked like NKU’s Jalen Billups was going to dominate (he had 12 of Bob Sumerel’s first 14 points to give them a 14-8 lead early), Deer Park Roofing’s two Miami players (Geovanie McKnight and Eric Washington), and, of course the coaching of Walt McBride, helped them send it to overtime tied at 91. Washington put Deer Park ahead, 97-95, with 2 second left, and Kentucky State’s Ulysses Thomas missed a three at the buzzer, although they ran a nice play to get him a good look. Billups ended up going 14 of 15 from the field for 31 points with 11 rebounds.
The finals ended up being Cameron and Kevin Mitchell of Clovernook Health Care against Deer Park Roofing’s balanced attack. Kevin Mitchell scored with 24.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 101 and Deer Park Roofing turned the ball over before it could get a final shot off. Like the night before, Clovernook scored the final six point to pull away from a tie score in overtime and win, 111-105.
Kevin Mitchell finished with 42 points and nine rebounds while Cameron Mitchell had 28 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Deer Park Roofing had six of their seven players finish with at least 10 points, including three with double-doubles – Greg Williams (23 pts, 11 rebs), Eric Washington (19 pts, 10 rebs – and eight assists), and Geovanie McKnight (17 pts, 13 rebs).
Rick had a good write-up of the final, also: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/2014/08/02/city-gear-the-league/13516797/

Dan, thanks for the write-ups...I think we all know why X wasn't involved, hopefully they're fully invested in the Brazilians.
