Helluva player for State Champion St. Edward- High School of Matt and Tim Stainbrook.

Will be a senior next year and still growing.

Chris Mack was at St. Eds Tuesday and offered a Scholarship. He has also been offered by udump, Penn State and Cleveland State among others, but he's heating up on the trail because of his State Playoff performances. Has been under the radar, but that will change.

Always good to be there early! (And better to be right.)

Looks like OSU and UC are interested as well: http://highschoolsports.cleveland.com/news/article/1940882107827943594/esa-ahmad-kipper-nichols-recruiting/

Sources have Nichols and 2016 CJ Walker on unofficial visits to a quiet XU campus this weekend. Send positive vibes.

CMack has also quietly built up a very, very good relationship with St. Ed's Coach Eric Flannery.. The way that the Stainbrooks have been welcomed to X has helped as well.

Having a good "in" with St. Ed's is a very nice thing to have, indeed.

I would hope that X having been in on him early will pay off.

Turns out X and Kipper have some similiarities..

Nichols seems to have it all. He has a good size and frame. He can play on the inside, attack the basket and shoot from beyond the 3-point line. He's a winner who has made three state tournaments in four seasons.

But when it comes to recruiting, Nichols, who is still unsigned, has been a puzzling afterthought. So much so that he's not even ranked by ESPN in Ohio's Class of 2015.

"I definitely play with a chip on my shoulder at all times," Nichols said. "I always want to show I'm the best player on the floor."

I thought we pulled back on Nichols once Gates committed...

Not 100% yet. Butler going after him HARD.

I thought Kipper was bound for Northwestern. Is he really still on the market for next season???

How good is this kid?

I would love to see them fill the last one with the best available player, but if Randolph transfers I want to see a decent PG added for sure. Teams needs to have 3 PGs on the roster and we would have two.

Depending on what we do with the Transfer situation here at Butler we will likely offer him. He would definitely become a 3 year starter after Dunham and Jones leave...But, I'm also uncertain if this is the direction the staff wants to go.

Well, well, well..........

"@dcassilo: Meanwhile, Xavier has one scholarship open. In the mix for both Trey Lewis and Kipper Nichols."

(Cassilo amended a minute later with "two scholarships open" after remembering the Randolph transfer.)

I've been saying all along that it wasn't over with Kip, no matter what the "wise guys" say. It may still not work out because of lots of moving parts, but when it comes to anything St. Eds related, don't doubt me.

And don't doubt that X's interest in Derek Funderburk may have an influence in everything. Keeping the good karma with Eric Flannery is big- and it is very good after the Stainbrook Experience.

Still will be shocked if he ends up at X. Butler wants him much more than X.

Looking more that way, Mill.

BTW Funderburk is going to Ohio State. Decision made last night.

Nichols just tweeted he is going to Tulane

Tulane?!?!? Bizarre choice over X and Butler.

Guess the kid prefers gumbo and po' boys to playing in the NCAA tournament.

Maybe it has to do with Bluiett and Gates in front of him on the depth chart.

The fact that he is going to Tulane tells me that he is not that good of a player, relatively speaking.

It confirms for me that he was no longer being recruited by Xavier but just acted like X was in it until the very end.

That too. I don't recall ever reading on Scout that X had started recruiting him again. If that was happening, we would have heard something. Those guys are pretty good on recruiting updates.

He wasn't being recruited by Xavier anymore. That ship had sailed. I think he misplayed his hand, frankly.

Yep. Seemed like Mack called his bluff on that "commitment" a while ago.

Best of luck.

I know, it was just further confirmation of what I already knew. I agree that he appears to have misplayed his hand, as he had the opportunity. It wouldn't surprise me if the continued mentions of Xavier were the actions of a teenage kid trying to save face after messing up (and a coaching staff supporting him in that regard).

Whatever the case, Tulane is a pretty fantastic "consolation prize" for Nichols. Harvard of the South located in New Orleans. The kid did just fine. Hope he tears up the AAC.

Go -

I was also referring to the fact that Butler was after Nichols too, not just X.

No way in hell that Tulane makes the NCAA tourney in his time in NO.

Of course Xavier and Butler are better basketball choices. But Tulane is a far better school than both, and it's located in New Orleans. I'm just saying that no one should feel back for Nichols.
