96-year-old man’s song for late wife an iTunes hit

Fred Stobaugh, a 96-year-old man living in Peoria, Illinois, lost his beloved wife of 73 years, Lorraine, in April.

Over the summer Fred entered a singer-songwriter contest hosted by a local recording studio. Entries were to be submitted via YouTube.

Fred sent a handwritten copy of the song he wrote for his wife, “Oh Sweet Lorraine.”

"Oh sweet Lorraine, I wish we could do the good times all over again.

“Oh sweet Lorraine, life only goes around once but never again.”

He didn’t win the contest, but the owners of Green Shoe Studio were so touched by Fred’s story that not only did they have his song professionally recorded, they turned his love story into a mini-documentary and posted it to YouTube.

“This video has spread like wildfire across the world. What a blessing it has been working with Fred,” the studio says on its website.

“We love the joy in his eyes when he realizes people are loving his song and are touched by his and Lorraine's love story.”

The video has been viewed more than 1.5 million times.

“Oh Sweet Lorraine” is now No. 10 on iTunes, right there with Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Robin Thicke.

And somewhere in heaven, a former A&W carhop – “just the prettiest girl I ever saw,” says Fred – must be smiling.

What a great story. Shows how the power of music can emotionally convey our love for one another.
